I. Job Purpose:The primary duties of this position are to perform a variety of skilled mechanical repairs, diagnostic inspections, maintenance and modifications to automotive, heavy equipment and other machinery and construction equipment. This position operates dump truck and provides snow control and flagging as directed by the Road Superintendent. Records and maintains all appropriate and required documentation.Perform scheduled maintenance service tasks, diagnose equipment failures and determine required repairs. Welding/fabrication, transport equipment for repairs, documentation of repairs, service and lock out tag out program. Order necessary parts, monitor tire life, truck driving, and snow control and flagging as directed by Road Superintendent. Pull lubricant samples for testing, review results and implement necessary corrections.II. Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities:Performs a variety of skilled mechanical repairs and modifications to automotive vehicles, pickups, dump trucks, construction equipment and machinery. Inspects, adjusts and replaces components and related parts in the following areas: gasoline and diesel engine repairs, automatic transmission, manual transmission and axle, front end, electrical systems, heating and air-conditioning, engine tune-ups, drive trans, suspension and steering and hydraulic systems. Perform a variety of tire replacement and repairs. Perform welding and fabrication from written and oral instructions. Rebuild automotive and construction equipment components such as: hydraulic rams, valves, pumps, brakes, etc. Performs major repairs and overhauls of gas and diesel equipment including transmission, differential, front end, hydraulic and related equipment systems overhauls. Follows all policies of the Road Department and Crook County Perform all other duties as assigned by the Fleet Supervisor as necessary during the workday. Provide assistance to Office staff and Working Road Supervisor when requested. Conduct maintenance activities in compliance with county, state and federal safety policies and practices. Provide snow control and sanding operations along County Accepted Maintained Roads as directed by the Road Superintendent. Shall always maintain a valid Oregon CDL and ICC card. Shall be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds, stoop kneel, bend, sit and stand for long periods of the workday. Work to be performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather including travel to all areas within Crook County. Diagnose malfunctions and safety concerns on vehicles, dump trucks and heavy equipment. Must be able to read and write timecards, service records, service, repair, diagnostic information and operator’s manuals.Perform inspections, tune-ups using diagnostic equipment, diagnose, adjust, replace, repair and or rebuild major components and related parts in the following areas: Engine, Transmission, Axle, Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Electrical, Heating, Air Conditioning and Hydraulic. Ability to operate Trucks during road work and snow control when directed by Road Superintendent. Follow all Safety Policies and Drug and Alcohol PolicyIII. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to maintain and clean work environment. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time during the course of the workday. Proficient in operating vehicles, dump trucks and heavy equipment on roadways in order to test drive and diagnose necessary repairs. Ability to effectively communicate with employees at all levels of the organization. Knowledge of equipment involved in road maintenance and repair. Ability to successfully complete projects under stressful and demanding deadlines with changing priorities and conditions. Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Regulations Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds. Ability to stoop, kneel and bend and be able to move fluently from one piece of equipment to another. Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools, equipment, and technology of the mechanic trade Knowledge of mechanical principles, occupational hazards and safety precautions of mechanic trade Knowledge of testing equipment for testing and repairing of starting systems, charging systems, front end repair and alignments, engine performance testing, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, fuel systems, drive trains and related automotive and heavy equipment components. Maintain facility, tools and equipment in a good clean working condition. Maintain and operate Mobile Service Truck for Field Repairs. Maintain records as needed for service and lock out tag out. Five Years in a professional capacity of diesel and gas mechanic. Knowledge and experience in engine and major component repairs on automotive, truck and heavy equipment. Shall maintain a valid CDL and ICC card for the State of Oregon.IV. Qualifications: Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent Minimum 5 years’ mechanic experience in Heavy Equipment and Automotive Prior to or on date of hire: Maintain a Valid CDL for the State of Oregon Able to complete a thorough employment and/or criminal history check. Able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test. Maintain a Valid ICC Medical Card.Maintain an Oregon Traffic Control Certification Certified welder preferred.
