SummerKids Leadership Team

Location: Bend, OR

Status: Winter-Spring: 3-5 hours/week of prep; Summer: 40 hours/week

Schedule:

February-June, 1-2 meetings/week based on availability

June 12th-August 16th, Monday - Friday. Exact summer hours will vary week to week but will be between the hours of 7:00 am and 5:30 pm.

Program Overview:

SummerKids is a weekly theme-based day camp for youth in 1st through 6th grade. The camp is typically hosted at a Bend elementary school (TBD) and can have up to 100 or more youth each week, separated into individual groups of 8-12 kids of a similar age. The camp runs from 9 am-3:30 pm, with extended care options beginning as early as 7:30 am and ending by 5:30 pm.

All staff at SummerKids are invaluable members of our team who are role models, motivators, team builders, educators, and spark champions. They facilitate a safe, fun, and confidence-building summer for all our campers. As part of a dynamic team, they will implement planned curricula, contribute ideas, and help to ensure a memorable camp experience for the campers, their families, and the other Camp Fire staff in the SummerKids community. We strive to create an environment where each camper and staff member has a sense of belonging, opportunities to share passions, and a place to thrive.

Position Overview:

A SummerKids leader is an integral part of the support team at SummerKids. They can also be expected to sub as counselors or other support staff as needed. Leaders may prepare curricula, organize supplies, direct staff meetings, communicate with parents, lead camp activities, mentor staff, manage extended care, step in to lead a group of youth, and perform other administrative tasks as needed. The leadership team will work together with staff to create an environment where each camper and staff member has a sense of belonging, opportunities to share passions, and a place to thrive. Camp Leaders work directly under the supervision and mentorship of the Camp Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Proactively identify and address any needs to ensure that the camp day runs smoothly for campers and staff. This could include enacting safety precautions related to smoke or heat, responding to campers with big emotions, cleaning up messes, or delivering supplies.

Manage a safe physical and emotional space for youth through direct interactions with youth and parents. This could include sending home sick campers, talking to parents about challenging behaviors, working on behavior agreements with youth, or promoting an equitable and inclusive environment.

Oversee the supply zone: inventory, order, and organize supplies for activities throughout the summer.

Counselor support with schedule planning, behavior management, implementation of elective activities, and field trip execution.

Manage staff: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervision and task delegation

Participate in planning meetings and professional development sessions before the start of the summer season with the leadership team.

Youth Program Skills: Understanding of best practices in youth program effectiveness, behavior management and risk management

Leadership Skills: Including strong oral and written communication skills, ability to collaborate in teams and to motivate team members, understanding of tactical needs of a successful youth program, willing to take initiative and ask for help when needed

Supervisory Skills: Competence to build, lead and supervise teams including delivering performance feedback, can independently solve problems, and ability to balance developing programs with strategic thinking, appropriately prioritize both big picture needs and small details in the moment

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree in related field (Ex: education, non-profit management); or 4+ years experience managing, planning and executing youth programs or events; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations: Valid Driver’s License, valid first aid/CPR training (or ability to get one by start date)

Physical Demands: Employee will be walking, standing, running, bending, crouching or stooping. Employee will occasionally lift light and heavy objects. For some programs, employee must be able to spend the majority of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions

Compensation: $20.50-$22.50 per hour, depending on experience. Eligible for up to $200 end-of-summer bonus.

Benefits: Weekly paid professional development sessions, mentoring in the form of goal setting, observation and feedback from the program manager. Free programs for dependents. $50 referral bonus per additional staff recruit. Eligible for 1 paid mental health day after 4 full weeks of employment.
