Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a Team Leader with a technical specialty in hotmelt formulation to join the Labels and Graphics Materials Group North America Research and Development team in Mentor, Ohio. In this role, the successful candidate will bring passion and determination to product development and innovation. As a hotmelt formulator, this role will participate in cross-functional project teams to drive new product development from concept to commercialization, as well as cost reduction and business continuity efforts. This role will work closely with marketing, supply chain, operations and quality teams to ensure business success in a leading company where individual and team success are recognized and rewarded.

Within our execution-focused Mentor Innovation Center, this role will partner with product development leaders and research scientists to develop and optimize adhesives for outstanding application performance in the narrow web label market. Numerous analytical methods are at your fingertips. Deeply understanding the science of adhesives is a top priority. The market is fast-paced, with internal and external customers pulling for new solutions. The result we are seeking is an Avery Dennison product portfolio that is cost-effective, efficient in manufacturing and differentiated print performance across multiple print platforms. Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Compound/formulate hot melt adhesives, with commercially available components, to meet customer and application performance requirements using knowledge of the manufacturing process, including mixing and coating, and knowledge of interactions between the hot melt adhesive and the key pressure-sensitive laminate products such as papers, films and silicones.
  • Autonomously craft & execute experiments and trial plans along with drafting test protocols.
  • Translate performance requirements to specifications
  • Test method development
  • Troubleshoot hot melt issues related to manufacturing equipment and process, quality, interactions between raw chemicals, etc. using analytical techniques such as rheology, GPC, DSC, IR, etc.
  • In the realm of hot melt adhesives, demonstrate sophisticated understanding of raw chemicals and alternatives, key suppliers and price positioning of raw chemicals, chemistry chains from feedstocks to end products, and the relationships between product characteristics and performance in the end use
  • Conduct technical comparisons of Avery Dennison products vs. competitive products
  • Collaborate globally with product development leaders and validate Voice-of-Customer to commercialize products with outstanding performance
  • Lead the technical development planning and breakthroughs as an input to NPD (new product development) projects through the stage gate process; work collaboratively with a cross functional team and guide decisions based on technical conclusions.
  • Conduct experimental studies, communicate scientific approach, convey results with data. Present technical analysis to support product approval and adoption through the Stage Gate process
  • Contribute and adhere to EHS standards and policies and connect to Avery Dennison’s 2025 Sustainability Goals

Qualifications

  • Degree in Polymer Science, Chemistry, Coatings, Physics, Material Science, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a comparable field (Masters, MBA and/or PhD preferred)
  • 7+ years industrial experience in the development of hotmelt adhesives with a high preference for hotmelts specifically and in performance testing for various applications
  • Project lead experience required.
  • Demonstrated proven commercial successes from your work.
  • Knowledge of extrusion process technology
  • Experience with Stage Gate process
  • Outstanding communicator, both verbally and in writing to both internal and external partners along with articulating performance requirements to customers, end users, suppliers, and third parties
  • Able to characterize adhesive properties (both chemical and physical) and interpret results from related analytical techniques and other print surface testing instruments.
  • High level of chemistry proficiency relating to the surface tension/energy, rheology of polymers, chemical bonding and structure/property relationships
  • Self-directed with the ability to lead multiple projects at one time with high accuracy and attention to detail
  • Domestic travel up to 25% of time (some potential for global travel)
