DefinitionUnder immediate supervision, is responsible for installing and maintaining water distribution lines, valves, and hydrants; performs related duties as required.Examples of Work(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Reads water atlases in order to locate water lines, curb boxes, and valves;
Operates valves to interrupt or start water service;
Locates curb boxes using metal detectors and meters;
Identifies and selects type, size of pipe, and related materials according to construction objectives;
Cuts or bends pipe using saws, pipe cutters, hand tools, and/or pipe cutting machines;
Removes sidewalks or pavement using jack hammers and/or saw cutting equipment;
Assembles, installs, and connects metal and non-metal pipes, tubes, joints, and fittings, including iron, flared copper, and plastic;
Flushes and/or chlorinates newly installed or repaired lines or hydrants;
Backfill holes with gravel using shovel and power tamper;
Unloads and loads construction materials on vehicles;
Inspects vehicles, equipment, and tools;
Drives truck to transport materials and workers to worksite;
Observes backhoe while digging to ensure utility line integrity; removes obstacles to repair location by excavating around utility lines with a variety of hand tools;
Sets up traffic control devices and directs traffic around worksite to ensure safety of workers and the general public;
Installs and/or repairs valves and/or fire hydrants;
Assists in identifying leaks and/or damage locations;
Notifies customers of water shut-off for repairs;
Restores or replaces areas removed during water line, valve, and hydrant repair/installation such as concrete sidewalks, brick walls, asphalt and concrete pavement, manholes, fences, trees, or other landscaping.
Minimum QualificationsOne (1) year of experience in general labor, construction, water distribution maintenance, or other underground utility maintenance.Possession of a valid driver’s license.By the completion of the probationary period,must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with an air brake endorsement.Test/Job Contact InformationThe names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and willreplacethe names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. Questions regarding this process can be directed to the Test Center at 614-645-7439. The examination process will consist of a 100% computerized examination covering Memorization, Problem Sensitivity, Information Ordering, Safety, and Water Maintenance, Tools, & Equipment.The exam is expected to be administered in February. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time. All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
