The Inpatient Medical Coder is responsible for assigningICD-10 CM /PCS codes as appropriate and abstracts pertinentinformation from patient records. Essential Duties andResponsibilities:
Assigns ICD-10-CM andICD-10-PCS codes, as appropriate and abstracts pertinent information frominpatient records
Ensures optimal reimbursement of all cases in compliancewith CMS policies and procedures and official coding guidelines
Implements medical center’s physician query process whencode assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the medical recordis inadequate, ambiguous or unclear for coding purposes
Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursementreporting requirements
Brings identified concerns to the Professional Recruiter whowill direct as needed
Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth bythe American Health Information Management Association
Adheres to Official Coding guidelines, CMS policies andregulations and Medical Center’s policies and procedures
Ensures client’s production and quality expectations are met
Responsible for timely review and response to Amergisinternal QA or client audit results as applicable
Communicates professionally and effectively with clients,coding staff, and Amergis corporate staff
Demonstrates effective time management skills by completingassignments within time constraints and calendar schedule
Completes work assignments independently
Engages in professional development activities to maintainprofessional certification
Reviews coding reference material including Medical Centerspecific coding procedures
Participates in orientation training activities and reviewmaterial provided
Completes production log and accurately captures coding timein Amergis or client system as applicable
Completes coding of all discharges/encounters ensuring theminimum productivity requirement are met
Encrypts all e-mails containing PHI sent to client
If unable to work on a given day, reports absence as soon aspossible to the Professional Recruiter Coding Manager, or via established timeoff request procedures for future time off
Submits vacation or time off requests following theestablished time off request procedures at least two weeks in advance
Performs other duties as assigned/necessary
Minimum Requirements:
Must hold at least one of the following certifications:RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H (COC) or have a preferred minimum of 2 yearsrelevant coding experience
Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to andfrom appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors,co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in theEnglish language is required
Computer proficiency required
Must be at least 18 years of age
