Description of WorkThis position with NCDOT offers fullState Benefits (https://oshr.nc.gov/state-employee-resources/benefits) , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. This position is assigned to the Model Research and Development Group of the Transportation Planning Division located in Raleigh, NC, and the employee will serve as a regional (or statewide) travel demand modeler. This position has the responsibility for developing and maintaining multiple complex regional multi-modal travel demand models in North Carolina. This position will also serve as the custodian for multiple MPO models and small area models. This position provides travel demand modeling (TDM) expertise and training to the Division and planning agencies. Work includes the development, enhancement, and maintenance of multimodal travel demand models; development and utilization of travel demand modeling tools and technologies; and investigation and implementation of new modeling methodologies/processes. In addition to technical proficiency, an awareness of policy issues is also desired as the position will be asked to develop models that can assist in the decision-making process which often includes the evaluation of various transportation policies.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesKnowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Experience in development, maintenance, and/or research of travel demand models (trip based, tour based, or activity based).

Experience with travel demand modeling software or programming languages.

Experience with processing and statistical analysis of household travel survey data, Census, and/or other big data.

Additional Expectations:Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of all technical aspects of travel demand modeling, preferably with TransCAD. Applicants should have a working knowledge of statistics and database concepts. Applicants must be able to work with a high degree of accuracy in evaluation of data, traffic trends, data projections and land use, and have good attention to detail, while completing assignments in a timely manner. Preference will be given to candidates with experience developing and maintaining travel demand models, and travel demand modeling training/teaching experienceMinimum Education and Experience RequirementsSome state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
