Salary Grade NC16 Salary range $54,197 - $94,844The Materials and Tests Unit (M&T) is responsible for establishing acceptance criteria for materials and manufactured products to be incorporated into the North Carolina highway system and ensuring that these materials and manufactured products meet these criteria and will function as intended.A sub-section of M&T, the Data Collection & Investigation Section, is to provide the Department with Quality Assurance on a variety of newly placed materials and products on highway construction projects. This section also provides the Department with investigation services when there is a material problem on a project (old or new). The Data Collection & Investigation Section Research aids both the Department’s Maintenance, Construction, and other Central Units in sharing responsibility for the monitoring of pavements, performing destructive and nondestructive testing of pavements as well as subsurface pipes and boxes, and various other data collection efforts along the North Carolina highway network.This position will serve as the Field Data Collection Engineer for North Carolina. This position will assist the State Data Collection and Investigations Engineer by assisting with day-to-day data collection needs.This position consists of performing investigative work (both in the field and the laboratory) to collect data, information and records on new products submitted for this Unit. Evaluation to determine reasons for poorly performing materials and/or manufactured products which fail to perform as designed. In addition, this position is responsible for performing necessary research, analyzing collected data, information and test results, and reporting the findings and conclusion of such. This position is also responsible for assisting the monitoring and performance evaluation of new or modified manufactured products and construction materials under evaluation, and the implementation of new or modified procedures and specifications in the field and the lab.Furthermore, this position is to assist the State Data Collection and Investigations Engineer in the operation of various inspection equipment assigned to the Materials and Tests Unit. Those pieces of equipment include: (1) Shaft Inspection Device Video Inspection System, (2) Pipe Rover Video Inspection System, (3) Concrete Core Drill, and (5) numerous other types of smaller hand-held equipment. This position will also aid the section by staying abreast of upgraded technology on data collection devices as well as new technology developed by the industry.
