Employees perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving service, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive, heavy equipment as well as use power tools. Employees may perform mechanical work at various levels. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system. Must be able to perform skilled mechanic work including but not limited to the following systems: Preventive maintenance, brakes (air and hydraulic), steering; tires and tubes; wheels, rims and hubs; transmission (auto and manual); charging system; cranking system; ignition system; lighting system; cooling system; exhaust system; fuel system; power unit, hydraulics; air conditioning; instruments and gages; and air intake system. Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
Knowledge of diagnostic software tools and equipment for trucks and heavy equipment.
Experience in diagnostics of basic electrical systems and proper repair of wiring.
Experience in basic hydraulic system repairs including component replacement and hoses.
Experience using a computer to obtain diagnostic and repair information.
Additional Expectations:The ability to be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Employee will need the ability to repair and maintain automotive and heavy equipment, and diagnose problems using diagnostic equipment, prepare paperwork essential to employment and equipment repair. Employee will need the ability to understand both written and oral instructions, move parts and materials necessary to repair and maintain equipment. Employee will need the ability to safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Employee will need the ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments. Employee will need the ability to demonstrate commitment to provide a safe working environment by leading by example. Employee will need the ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Employee will need the ability to read schematics, diagrams, and sketches and possess the physical strength to move relatively heavy objects. Employee will need the ability to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Employee will need to operate a state vehicle. The selected candidate for this position may have to operate the fuel truck at times, as needed. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Note: Employee will need to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools.
