Description of WorkThis position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits (https://oshr.nc.gov/state-employee-resources/benefits) , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. INTERNAL POSTING - Only temporary or PERMANENT NC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION EMPLOYEES or layoff candidates with the State of North Carolina eligible for RIF priority re-employment consideration as described by GS126 may apply. Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts and pipes within Division 13. In addition to work performed at the prior level, this level may occasionally operate a backhoe, excavator, and truck crane. This position will report to the Mitchell County Bridge Maintenance Office. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employees will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools. The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. The recommended applicant could possibly be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, the recommended applicant may be required to work at night or on weekends. When inclement weather occurs, the recommended applicant may be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesQualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc.
Experience in the operation of at least one of the following: air compressor, forklift, dump truck, vibrator roller compactor, front end loader, backhoe, tractor trailer, truck mounted crane, lattice crane, rubber tire excavator, tractor with attachment, auger or track excavator, asphalt distributor, asphalt tanker, chip spreader, crawler tractor, motor grader, scraper, track loader, widening machine, asphalt paving machine, track excavator, computer controlled pesticide applicator, paint machine or tug boat.
Experience establishing work zones with traffic control devices such as temporary signs, cones, drums, etc.
Additional Expectations: Must be able to complete all mandatory safety courses to establish work zones with traffic control devices such as temporary signs, cones, drums, etc. within six months of date of hire. Work intermediate level skills in a variety of functional areas including equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/ shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation, and maintenance of erosion control. Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (i.e.: traffic control and environmental stewardship) Operate a motor vehicle, and safely be able to lift /carry 50 lbs. May require work during nontraditional workhours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Applicant must either be in possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFT 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
