Description of WorkThis position with NCDOT offers fullState (https://oshr.nc.gov/state-employee-resources/benefits) Benefits, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. Salary Grade: NC05 / Salary Range: $31,688.00 - $55,453.00.This position functions as Transportation Worker II. In addition to work performed at the prior level, this level may occasionally operate a backhoe, excavator, and truck crane. This work is related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of State-owned fixed and moveable bridges, culverts, and pipes 54 inches and larger within Division 2. This work is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments, in all types of weather conditions, in and around heavy equipment, use power tools, and must be able to safely exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. This position requires working in a close environment or independently, as needed. When inclement weather occurs, this position will be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process. This work covers a wide variety of functional areas including equipment operation; pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspection, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipes, bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting and painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspection, trenching and shoring, maintenance to ferry dock ramps, lead paint removal, steel fabrication, steel beam repairs, and other duties as assigned. Employee must be able to conduct flagging operations and apply proper traffic control techniques as needed. Ability to climb preferable. This position is currently located in the Kinston Bridge Maintenance Department which is responsible for Greene, Jones, and Lenoir Counties. This position may include working in other Bridge Departments within the Division. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices.

Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones.

Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures.

Knowledge of work zone safety and NCDOT Workplace policies and procedures.

Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, asphalt patching, or snow and ice removal.

Additional Expectations:Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. This job will involve work to be performed safely while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, over water, in water, in extreme heat and cold, and during inclement weather. Safety toe footwear is needed. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
