As a Ferry Crew Member II, your duties will include directing the parking of trucks, automobiles, and trailers on the deck to ensure proper weight distribution on the vessel, chocking wheels to prevent vehicle movement while underway, patrolling deck area while underway to maintain discipline and order and prevent passengers from entering unauthorized areas and from sitting on side rails or standing in dangerous areas. You will investigate accidents occurring while loading or unloading and assist the ferry captain in preparing detailed reports of accidents, incidents, and activities for the ferry operations manager. Duties will also include observation of passengers for suspicious actions and behavior and reporting any activities to the ferry captain in accordance with Homeland Security guidelines. You will be responsible for rescue boat activities including supervision of a deckhand, inspection of all deck machinery and fixtures to ensure proper operating conditions and may assist the engineer to perform routine maintenance repair work. Other duties include steering the vessel through the prescribed course under the supervision of the ferry captain; assisting the crew in securing the vessel in case of fire, breakdowns, or inclement weather; assisting maintenance crews in repairing the vessel when in dry dock and all other related duties as required.This position works from theOcracoke Ferry Operations and works shift work - 7 days on and 7 days off. A COPY OF BOTH TWIC AND VALID USCG MERCHANT MARINERS CREDENTIAL INCLUDING A CURRENT MEDICAL CARD MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE INTERVIEW PROCESS. Basic knowledge of “navigational rules of the road” including navigation lights and signals.
Skills in directing emergency response teams and mustering passengers and disembarking them to rescue craft safely.
Skills to load and unload a ferry vessel with regard to the vessel’s stability.
Experience in launching and recovering a rescue boat.
Demonstrated ability without assistance to pull an un-charged 1.5-inch diameter 50’ fire hose to full extension and to lift a charged 1.5-inch diameter fire hose to firefighting position.
