Description of WorkThis position with NCDOT offers fullState Benefits (https://oshr.nc.gov/state-employee-resources/benefits) , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. Internal Posting- Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply. Position will function as a Transportation Worker III in the Division 1 Traffic Services Unit located in Hertford County. Work is primarily associated with the sign crew and could possibly fill in with the paint crew serving on a paint marking, preline/sight distance, long-line paint, or thermoplastic special pavement marking crew on an as needed basis. The employee will install and maintain signs, sign posts, and hardware inventories. The employee will operate and maintain a variety of small hand and power tools; serve as a sign erector, haul paint supplies and flag traffic. Work also includes the supervision of subordinate employees; as well as training employees on how to properly coordinate sign installation or replacement operations. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with the Advanced Transportation Worker level. The employee must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members, other departments, and the public. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures

Experience evaluating sign conditions and retro-reflectivity

Experience supervising subordinates and directing daily activities

Experience in Intermediate Work Zone Safety

Experience operating a sign truck with attachments

Additional Expectations:Employee must have the ability to legally operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required forthis position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Employee will be required to work hours other than regular schedule due to emergencies and heavy workloads. The employee should be familiar with or be able to learn to use small hand tools needed for installing and maintaining signs. Position is labor intensive, and the employee will be required to work in a diverse working environment; in all weather conditions, heavy traffic, and traffic moving at high speeds.
