Description of WorkThis position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits (https://oshr.nc.gov/state-employee-resources/benefits) , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. “INTERNAL POSTING” – Only Temporary or Permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 may apply.Salary Grade: NC06 Salary Range: $33,272 to $58,226Hiring Range: $51,730- $55,512This position will report to the Clyde Bridge Maintenance Unit in Division 14. Work includes, but is not limited to the maintenance, repair, and construction of State-owned bridges, culverts, and pipes. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. Employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. Employee will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, with hand and power tools and various other pieces of equipment. Employee must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. Employee will be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, employee may be required to work at night or on weekends. Employee must be able to supervise and train others, be able to direct the daily activities of a work crew and may serve as a crew leader in the absence of other Supervisors or crew leaders. Work includes a variety of functions including equipment operation, pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, machine operation, contract inspect, repair of culverts, bridges, large pipe bulkheads and pile clusters, sandblasting/painting, demolition work, welding, structure inspect, trenching/shoring, lead paint removal, steel fabrication and steel beam repair, installation, and maintenance of erosion control. Must be willing to attend training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state/federal regulations and maintain certifications in all required areas (ie: traffic control and environmental stewardship). Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time in and around steep and uneven terrain. This position responds to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures

Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category B equipment (Asphalt Distributor, Asphalt Mixer, Asphalt Patcher, Crack Sealing Machine, Ditching Machine, Force Feed Loader, Front End Loader, Lube Truck, Asphalt Maintainer, Post Driver, Skid Steer, Street Sweeper, Tandem Dump Truck, Tractor “A” Boom Mower, Truck w/Aerial Device).

Demonstrated ability to be the Lead Worker on a Bridge Crew without supervision.

Experience in operating at least 1 of the following pieces of Bridge Category “D” equipment: Lattice Crane, Rubber Tire Excavator, or Track Excavator

Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculate quantities and placing orders and plan reading and layout directing drilling and cutting of holes, direct erection of steel beams and bridge components.

Additional Expectations:Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Applicant must either be in possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Safety toe shoes are required. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
