About Carolina Flowers

Carolina Flowers is a florist and 30-acre flower farm serving Asheville, NC, and beyond. We create designs for weddings and events throughout Western North Carolina, Charlotte and Greenville, and we create daily flower deliveries for our Asheville customers. We operate from our retail storefront on Haywood Road in West Asheville, and we are transitioning our production team to our new studio in Hendersonville. We are currently moving our farm from Marshall to Hendersonville.

Carolina Flowers is in an exciting period of growth and expansion, and we hope to find a career-oriented Florist with great skills who wants to grow as a member of our creative team.

Job Description

The Florist will create beautiful floral arrangements as a member of our floral team, designing for daily deliveries, weddings and events. As a member of our tight-knit design team, you’ll be an important figure in maintaining the Carolina Flowers aesthetic of natural, organic florals.

The Florist will be responsible for creating some of our most amazing work: lush installations, bridal bouquets, chandeliers, and more. The Florist will also engage in the everyday labor that is floristry, including washing buckets, creating mechanics, filling water picks, sweeping floors, etc.

The Florist should have at least one year of professional floral design experience. More experience is an asset. However, this experience should be relatively recent, and you should possess strong knowledge of current floristry trends.

The Florist will work at both Carolina Flowers locations, including our Haywood Road store and our Hendersonville production studio. Expect to report to both properties. Schedules will be dispersed 10 days prior and will include some regularity. (For example, every Tuesday at Haywood Road). The Florist will also travel to venues throughout Western North Carolina, Charlotte and Greenville, SC, to create wedding and event orders. (In most cases, a company vehicle is provided. Otherwise, mileage in your own vehicle will be expensed.)

The Florist must have reliable transportation.

The Florist should possess a production-oriented mindset with the focus and drive to accomplish a list of pieces on a given day. This person should be goal-oriented and invested in the process of completing the schedule of event work on time.

The Florist must be able to receive feedback and redirection on the style and quality of work in a fast-paced environment. We are a creative team, and through feedback, we all grow together.

Light customer service will be part of this job when you are working at events or at our Haywood Road location, which is public facing. The Hendersonville studio is typically private, although you may be required to assist with events at this location from time to time.

We have a shop dog named Huey at the Hendersonville location. He's small. You must tolerate a dog at work. (No additional dogs are permitted at the studio.)

Roles & Responsibilities:

Excellent design skills that mesh with our natural, organic style

Using your institutional knowledge to make sure design standards are upheld across the company

Industry knowledge and enthusiasm for floral design and learning

Quick, efficient design skills

Ability to construct installations, follow instructions about mechanics and problem solve

Calm and motivated under pressure

Ability to understand and adhere to timelines

You must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds

You must be able to work on ladders

Design in accordance with Carolina Flowers brand standards

Because we are a fast-paced, quickly-growing company, the Floral Designer should be flexible and excited about pitching in with other company initiatives as needed, whether that means filling in at the cash register, running supplies to the farm, washing buckets or helping execute a glamorous photo shoot. As a member of our team, it’s likely we will ask you to participate in outside-the-box team initiatives. We have fun, but we work very hard!

This is a full-time position, so you’ll also need the flexibility to switch duties during the off season. You will likely collaborate with other team members to create seasonal wreaths, make candles, or help with other business tasks.

Comprehensive knowledge of flower varieties and conditioning techniques

Experience with floral recipes

Demonstrated skill and creativity with floral mechanics

The ability to understand and follow design standards

Must be able to work creatively on a deadline

Must be able to adapt to change — our flowers change with the seasons!

Knowledge of design and color theory

Industry nerd who understands the big picture floral industry

Excellent customer service skills and customer service experience

Ability to operate a phone system and take orders via the phone

An upbeat, positive attitude that comes across in everything you do

Enthusiastic team player

Attention to detail

Organized and efficient

Resiliency and indefatigability

Punctual and reliable

Excitement about becoming part of a quickly growing company

Our preference is that we would be your only floral employer. Freelance or part-time work for other florists (including yourself) must be disclosed and approved

Benefits: One week PTO per year accrual after 6 months of employment with more PTO awarded based on performance.

Each full-time member of our staff receives a stipend and time for an educational experience every 18 months.

Staff receive 30% on flowers and anything at our store.

Eligible for bonus pay for wedding clean ups after 9 p.m.

Reports to: Studio Manager

Collaborates with: Owner, Florists, Floral Assistants, Farmers

Start Date: As soon as possible

Schedule: Typically Tuesday through Saturday with some occasional Sunday work required (on average, once a month during May, June, September, October and November, depending on our event schedule)

Compensation: $20+ per hour depending on experience.

Transportation: Must have reliable transportation for commuting to West Asheville and Hendersonville. From time to time, Carolina Flowers may request an employee use their personal vehicle for business deliveries. In these cases, mileage is reimbursed at $0.30/mile to cover fuel and wear of your car; fuel costs are not reimbursed in addition to mileage.
