Community Organizer - Lost Job or Business Because of Hurricane?

Beacon Village, a resilient and diverse neighborhood in Swannanoa, NC, was among the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Helene. As we transition from immediate response to long-term recovery, we are seeking a compassionate and motivated Community Recovery & Engagement Coordinator to serve as a connector, storyteller, and mobilizer for our neighborhood’s future.

This position will lead community outreach, social media and communications, fundraising support, volunteer coordination, and play a key role in identifying residents with unmet needs while fostering neighborhood unity and resilience.

Funding for this position requires that the employee has lost their job or business as a result of Hurricane Helene. Funding source will require proof of such a loss, so if you didn't lose your position because of the hurricane, please do not apply.

Key Responsibilities:

Community Engagement & Outreach:

Serve as a visible, accessible presence in Beacon Village to listen to residents, identify unmet recovery needs, and build trust.

Develop community-building activities and events that foster healing, connection, and resilience.

Facilitate connections between residents and available resources, agencies, or support services.

Marketing & Communications

Create and manage digital content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to share stories, needs, recovery milestones, and volunteer opportunities.

Write newsletters, flyers, press releases, and web content to amplify the community’s voice and progress.

Build positive relationships with local media, partner organizations, and community leaders.

Fundraising & Resource Development

Support neighborhood-led fundraising efforts including online campaigns, local business sponsorships, and events.

Assist with writing small grant proposals and preparing reports or stories for donors.

Help maintain a donor database and ensure timely acknowledgments and impact updates.

Volunteer Recruitment & Coordination

Recruit, orient, and manage volunteers for cleanup, rebuilding, events, and resident support.

Maintain volunteer sign-up systems and coordinate schedules for maximum impact and safety.

Recognize and retain volunteers through appreciation and meaningful engagement.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong passion for community-driven recovery, social justice, and equity.

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with diverse populations.

Experience in any combination of: grassroots organizing, nonprofit communications, volunteer management, or disaster recovery.

Proficient in using email marketing tools, social media platforms, Google Workspace, and/or graphic tools like Canva.

Ability to work independently and with flexibility in a dynamic recovery environment.

Familiarity with Swannanoa, Beacon Village, or rural Appalachian communities is highly desirable.

Spanish or bilingual ability is a plus.

Working Conditions:

Work involves being on-site in Swannanoa, including occasional weekends or evenings for events and outreach.

Must be able to navigate neighborhood streets, community centers, and potentially disaster-affected areas.
