OverviewThe temporary, part time EH&S Technician plays a key role in supporting New York Medical College/Touro’s comprehensive environmental health & safety, and research compliance programs for the entire NYMC/Touro campus. Reporting to the Director, this position assists with the coordination and execution of research and laboratory safety and compliance initiatives, and participates in various other aspects of NYMC/Touro’s EH&S programs on a temporary and/or part time basis. The technician is responsible for performing technical duties to assure compliance with regulations and proactively minimize risks to employees and the environment. Responsibilities

Laboratory Inspection Program: Schedules and complete physical laboratory inspections for NYMC/TU. Researches OSHA requirements for safe laboratory practices. Completes training to become competent in inspection practices. Able to dialogue with researchers and coach them on improvements. Learn and use the Laboratory on-line inspection program and enter inspection results into the lab inspection program. Complete corrective actions and work order requests, if required. Work with laboratories to complete physical chemical inventory for each lab.

Chemical Inventory. Learn and understand the NYMC chemical management/SDS system. Develop dialog with the data base vendor to understand how the system functions. Using the physical chemical inventory completed in the Laboratory inspections, update the Chemical Inventory database to reflect the actual chemical contained in each laboratory

Assist with day to day response to EHS program initiatives, when requested.

All other duties as requested.

QualificationsEducation requirement:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent EHS experience.

Technical/computer skills:

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access). Ability to manage department specific software programs related to inspection management, training database, and other on line applications. Must be able to use iPad/iPhone applications.

Prior experience:

0-3 years work experience in environmental health & safety field (e.g. biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, OSHA, EPA/DEC ).

Other skills/requirements

Significant collaborating/communicating with college professionals.

This position is 100% on site only, no work form home option is available

Physical and Environmental Demands:

Physical:

Walking/Bending 40-90%

Sitting/Computer work: 20-50%

Environmental:

Individual will access laboratories that contain chemical, biological and radiological hazards, as well as vivarium space.

May work in dusty areas.

May work in cold (refrigerators/coolers) or warm (outside) areas
