POSITION SUMMARY:The Lead Spanish interpreter coordinates staffing for 30 Spanish Interpreters and provides interpreting services for all clinical and professional University of Rochester Medical Center staff, patients and family members/significant others who are with the patient. All Interpreters on staff generally provide these services during normal business hours at the Medical Center, Outpatient Clinics, and Hospital Affiliates.The Lead is responsible, in consultation with the Manager, for the oversight and coordination of direct Spanish interpreting services to ensure coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, the Lead is expected to be available on-call on a rotating basis during which he/she coordinates the last-minute needs of all languages by contacting suitable interpreters and serving as a liaison between requestors, staff, and agencies.The Lead will assist in training, supervision, and evaluation of Spanish Interpreter staff, and perform other duties as assigned.TYPICAL DUTIES:

Manages staffing schedules and aids in planning for daily operations to provide optimal patient care interpreting coverage

Assesses and verifies interpreter availability

Establishes and monitors internal Spanish interpreter on¿call schedule

Collaborates with and provides consultation to scheduling team to achieve maximum coverage for patient centered care

Evaluates schedule for optimal use of internal vs external resources

Ensures 24/7 interpreting coverage through internal, external, and remote resources

Identifies and confirms patients’ preferred language for healthcare encounters to assist in service scheduling

Supervises aspects of human resources including performance evaluations, staff timecards, corrective action, onboarding new staff, staff meetings, team building, and staff recognition

Consults with program manager on:

Performance evaluations

Supervision

Corrective action

Interviewing

Provides general onboarding and orientation to new staff

Directly observes new staff at end of training period and at 6 month performance review to ensure consistency and quality of interpretations, documentation in electronic medical record, and adherence to content learned during training/onboarding

Co¿leads/leads monthly staff meetings

Conducts regular 1:1 supervision

Collaborates with program manager on team¿building and staff recognition

Performs supervisory administrative duties

Supervises payroll and approves meal exception forms

Approves staff time off requests based on operational needs

Approves staff conference schedule requests

Evaluates and resolves service escalations when serving as interpreter manager on¿call

Monitors day¿to¿day staff communication regarding scheduling/dispatch

Completes required trainings, attends staff and department meetings, etc

Audits staff service provision documentation in electronic medical record

Monitors staff professional development and education transcripts, including compliance with annual mandatory education and health updates

Completes yearly mandatory online policy and procedure training

Completes yearly health updates

QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.

Three years interpreting experience required.

Two years in a healthcare setting required.

Must be fluent in English and Spanish with strong verbal and written skills in both languages required.

Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical tests and procedures in working languages required.

Strong customer service and communication skills required.

Completion of 40-hour training course in medical interpreting required.

Certification in healthcare interpreting through CCHI or IMIA strongly preferred at time of hire or within 18

months of hire strongly preferred.

Two years document translation experience preferred.

Translation certification preferred.
