General DescriptionIncumbents perform public contact work in the Police Department. Tasks may include: interviewing complainants on the telephone or in person; completing written reports describing misdemeanors, violations, nuisances, and vacant properties; monitoring surveillance cameras placed in high-crime areas; assisting with telephone calls and reception duties at Police facilities. Work schedules may include work hours on any shift and on any days of the week (including weekends) depending on the needs of the department. Public Safety Aides receive supervision from a sworn staff member. CITY RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION. Typical Work Activities

Observes action captured by surveillance cameras throughout the City;

Evaluates observed activity to determine if it may be suspicious or criminal in nature;

Documents observations of suspicious behavior on computerized form;

Uses police radio, telephone, 911 and/or computers to communicate with Officers to investigate/take action;

Testifies at criminal proceedings;

Interviews callers, by phone and in person, to gather information about crimes, nuisances, and property information;

Completes reports for violations, crimes, and other situations, in accordance with the criteria identified in RPD General Order 460;

Completes reports about properties which are temporarily vacant, for use in alerting patrol units about properties needing special attention;

Makes follow-up calls to citizens to advise them about delays in service, the status of quality of life issues, and other, lower priority, issues;

Receives public, answers phones, relays messages, responds to inquiries, and refers public or calls to appropriate staff or to other offices;

Enters data into computer databases regarding program activities, phone calls and video monitoring;

May fingerprint individuals applying for employments, pistol permits, and naturalization;

May type various documents such as memoranda, reports, letters, records, and correspondence;

May sort and file printed materials;

May operate office equipment, such as calculators, postage machines, computers, and photocopiers;

May retrieve information from files and disseminate it, as authorized;

May conduct background investigations.

Minimum QualificationsHigh School Diploma or Equivalent, PLUS:Work experience as a sworn law enforcement officer (i.e., police officer, peace officer); OR Completion of 30 semester credit hours (or 40 quarter credit hours) in a college program for criminal justice or police science; OR Current or past participation in a public safety related career exploration program.
