Job DescriptionNYC DOT Division of Traffic Operations is seeking to hire a Civil Engineering Intern in the Signals Timing and Intersection Control Unit. The candidate will perform work in various traffic signal timing priority projects related to Vision Zero, including the 25 MPH Signal Retiming Project, implementing Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), and conducting studies and analyzing the feasibility of installing left turn signals and LPIs at the high crash and significant turning conflict locations. The successful candidate will conduct field investigations and implement timing changes to enhance operational efficiency and safety for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic; and analyze proposed traffic studies using microscopic traffic simulation programs (i.e. Synchro, Thru-link). Perform traffic impact analysis to increase the capacity of arterial street networks, study the operational impact of implementing dedicated bus and bike lanes along heavily trafficked corridors, and recommend the appropriate signal timing treatments. Analyze, design, and modify signal timings for new traffic signals as well as various in-house traffic safety-focused projects. Perform traffic work of moderate difficulty in such specialized fields as traffic signal controls, signal timing, signal design, signal construction, and maintenance. Perform various field surveys in all five boroughs. The candidate will be involved in supporting the daily planning, coordination, and execution of the signals and signal timing studies, and potentially other transportation-related initiatives within the Division as the need arises, and execution of the Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) program.This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37. Preferred Skills:

Excellent written and communication skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Synchro Studio, HCM 2000, and Thru-Traffic

Possess a motor vehicle driver’s license, valid in the state of New York. This license must be maintained throughout employment.

A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college. A degree in any other engineering area or in civil engineering technology is not acceptable.
