Job DescriptionInternship Program The Department of City Planning (DCP) is excited to announce the 2024 Paid Summer Internship Program! DCP’s Summer Internship Program aims to introduce its mission to both undergraduate and graduate interns and strives to integrate interns into the agency’s work program by fostering on-the-job training and career exploration. Our program includes orientation, presentations from subject matter experts and site visits to exciting projects across the five boroughs. Program Duration: 8-10 Weeks beginning on June 3rd, 2024 Civil Service Title: Summer College Intern Hourly Rate: $17.50 Shift: Maximum of 34 hours per week Job ID: 629419 Application Deadline: Sunday, March 24th, 2024 Minimum Requirements: As of June 2024, the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program or be a recent graduate (winter/spring term 2024). NOTE: Appointment to this title/role is only valid for the duration of the internship program. All applicants must be available for the full duration (8-10 weeks) of the program. Former interns and employees are not eligible to apply for this Summer Internship ProgramAbout DCP DCP has an expansive work program focused on the creation and strengthening of great neighborhoods, affordable housing, vibrant commercial and institutional centers, while promoting strategic growth, transit-oriented development, sustainable communities and high-quality open space and waterfronts. Our aim is to enhance quality of life in the city, in part by initiating comprehensive, consensus-based planning and zoning changes for individual neighborhoods and business districts, as well as establishing policies and zoning regulations applicable citywide. This year at DCP, internship opportunities are available in the following key support areas: BOROUGH OFFICES The Borough Offices (the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) are responsible for a wide range of planning, urban design and zoning activities, and work in close consultation with the central divisions on borough-specific and city-wide issues. Borough offices formulate borough-wide and local area plans, review and process land use applications, and provide technical assistance and planning data to the City Planning Commission, elected officials, public agencies, community boards and civic and business groups.

Conduct neighborhood and land use studies

Manage private and public land use applications

Liaise with communities and other stakeholders

Internship opportunities available in the following divisions:

o Bronx Office o Brooklyn Office o Staten Island Office STRATEGIC PLANNING Strategic Planning examines issues of long-term strategic importance; supervises the Zoning, Urban Design, Transportation, and Waterfront and Open Divisions; and provides policy guidance to staff and the Chairman.

Provide in-depth planning information and policy analysis, for DCP initiatives, other agencies and the public

o URBAN DESIGN - The urban designers at the Department of City Planning (DCP) offer guidance and incorporate urban design best practices in all aspects of planning, to ensure that every new building, street and public space positively contributes to their surrounding communities. The Urban Design (UD) Office draws from expertise in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design across a range of projects in a variety of capacities. Within a dynamic work environment, the UD Office leads the development of city planning policy to support excellence in urban design through citywide initiatives and neighborhood studies, design guidance, development of design tools and resources, built environment research and civic engagement. The UD Office provides urban design expertise to the agency, the City Planning Commission (CPC), elected officials, community boards, other city agencies and the public-at-large.o CAPITAL PLANNING - The Capital Planning team works to foster more collaborative and equitable capital planning through data analytics, technology, and strategic coordination with agency partners. City agencies are planning to invest over $134 billion in New York City’s infrastructure and buildings over the next decade. The Capital Planning team supports City agencies as they strategically plan their facility siting and infrastructure investment. We do this by reforming existing processes, developing capital investment programs, and disseminating data-driven planning analytics. We are responsible for integrating planning perspectives into the City’s capital budget planning and decision-making processes.o TRANSPORTATION - The Policy and Analytics Division will focus on access and mobility related to land use, including alignment of planning for growth and economic activity with local and citywide transportation availability. Current division priorities include a focus on post-pandemic changes in transportation patterns and needs, maintenance and expansion of sustainable transportation options including personal micromobility and public transportation, and an improved understanding of current and future transportation demand. o POPULATION - To understand our city’s population, DCP’s demographers and geographers compile, analyze, and disseminate data, inclusive of the U.S. Census Bureau’s decennial census and its annual American Community Survey (ACS). We use these data daily to improve the lives of every New Yorker, from planning for an aging population to determining how and where to offer language services. In this dynamic city, our data and analyses are essential for government officials, community organizers, businesses, and many others to make decisions and plan for the future. TECHNICAL PLANNING

Internship opportunities available in the following divisions:

o Pipeline/Commission - Responsible for scheduling and organizing internal review meetings and the public Review Sessions and Public Meetings of the City Planning Commission (CPC). The Division tracks land use applications through the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) and non-ULURP applications from filing to vote, reviews CPC Reports, develops Review Session agendas and Public Meeting calendars and maintains the agency's Zoning Application Portal (ZAP) database that supports the system of tracking and monitoring land use applications. Work performed in Land Use Review Division is highly deadline driven.PLANNING SUPPORT

Provide inter- and intra-agency coordination

Create tools and resources to improve access to data and expertise

Implement processes to increase efficiency and drive planning consistency

Internship opportunities available in the following divisions:

o COUNSEL'S OFFICE - Counsel’s Office provides legal advice and services to the City Planning Commission and DCP staff on all relevant matters, including land use and zoning law, zoning text development and interpretation, the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), private and City-sponsored applications and projects, environmental review, litigation involving DCP, DCP compliance with the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and other laws, and personnel matters. o COMMUNITY PLANNING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT - Serves as the center for DCP’s coordinated community planning work and, through the newly established Civic Engagement Studio, a think tank for advancing and expanding increasingly inclusive civic engagement practices and policies. The Team is charged with ensuring a complete and coordinated internal decision-making process for all major initiatives through inter-divisional discussion and leading the Civic Engagement Studio.QualificationsAs of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
