Job Description To be considered for this position candidate must be either serving permanently in the Assistant Transportation Specialist, or be reachable on the Civil Service list, Exam List #0154, or be eligible under the 55a program. The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working and doing business in New York City. Research Implementation and Safety (RIS) is a sub-division that identifies, plans and implements annual street improvement projects and programs throughout New York City, all focused on improving safety, through programs such as Vision Zero, Safe Streets for Seniors, High Pedestrian Crash Locations, and Neighborhood Slow Zones. The School Safety unit is responsible for improving safety near K-12 schools throughout New York City. The group focuses primarily on pedestrian safety, accessibility, and the development of projects that encourage non-motorized transportation.Under the direction of senior staff and with wide latitude for independent judgement, the selected candidate will be responsible for conducting field investigations and performing data collection to support School Safety programs, including installing School Slow Zones, school loading zones, and other specialized safety treatments and street redesigns to improve youth safety. Typical assignments will involve detailed curbside/intersection inventories, traffic control and land use assessment, examination of street operations, and radar speed surveys. Additional duties to be performed include data entry using City-specific transportation software (e.g., SIMS to create and approve sign orders), assisting with data analysis, maintaining databases, and preparing relevant forms, reports, correspondence, and logs. The selected candidate must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions. The selected candidates will be responsible for ensuring compliance to all agency safety rules and regulations in creating a safe work environment for themselves and colleagues, ensuring all safety equipment and gear are used and worn properly on work site. The candidate will be asked to work collaboratively and inclusively, seeking to cultivate continued professional development and effectively communicate with all stakeholders. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, planning or mathematics or one of the physical sciences; or

High school diploma or its educational equivalent and 4 years of full-time experience performing technical work on traffic programs and citywide transportation studies; or

Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.
