Job DescriptionThe General Litigation Division of the NYC Law Department seeks an experienced attorney to represent the City in federal and State court litigation. The Division’s caseload includes both routine matters and challenges to important programs in diverse areas including education, health care, public assistance benefits, prison conditions, foster care, freedom of information, campaign finance and election law. Many of the division's cases are brought as class actions in federal court and raise complex and novel issues of statutory and constitutional construction. Recent cases have involved: an equal protection challenge to changes to the admissions process for the Department of Education’s specialized high schools; challenges pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act regarding accessibility of court houses and police stations for disabled persons; and a claim by minority students in the City’s high schools that they have fewer opportunities to participate in team sports than other students.
