Gayogohó:nǫˀ Learning Project – Project Manager
19 hours/week $25/hour, sick time and vacation time.
One year position with extension desired (dependent on securing additional funding)
The Gayogohó:nǫˀ Learning Project was founded in 2021. Its mission is to support Gayogohó:nǫˀ language and culture revitalization efforts that are rooted in ancestral Gayogohó:nǫˀ lands. We aim to serve as an apolitical meeting point for Gayogohó:nǫˀ people and current residents of ancestral Gayogohó:nǫˀ lands seeking to learn more about Gayogohó:nǫˀ language and culture. Public programs to date have included Gayogohó:nǫˀ language and culture classes and discussion groups.
The Project Manager will oversee daily operations and develop a plan for long-term sustainability of the Gayogohó:nǫˀ Learning Project, a fiscally sponsored project of the Center for Transformative Action.
● Work with the Project Working Group and Advisory Board to identify key stakeholders and facilitate critical relationship-building and communication between and among Gayogohó:nǫˀ people and non-Indigenous people.
● Design an efficient system for documenting finances and work with the Project treasurer to make sure all income and expenses are regularly documented, match CTA records, and are regularly shared with the Advisory Board.
● Manage income and expense reporting to CTA.
● Help Advisory Board develop annual budget and make sure finances are aligned with the Project’s annual budget.
● Manage Ithaca-based Gayogohó:nǫˀ Culture workshops and offerings (enrollment, logistics, and communications).
● Produce monthly newsletter for e-distribution following guidance from the Advisory Board and soliciting input from the Working Group.
● Work with the Advisory Board to secure funding for the Project by researching and managing the process of applying for appropriate grants and other fundraising activities.
● Assist project leaders in responding to inquiries about the Project.
● Communicate regularly with the Advisory Board and Project Leaders.
● Initiate and manage the process of transitioning from a fiscally sponsored project to independent not-for-profit status.
● Supervise work study students when they are working with the project.
The Project Manager is responsible for working with CTA to ensure all CTA policies and procedures are followed across 4 general categories:
1. Governance: Maintains a project Advisory Board (AB) of at least five members that meet at least quarterly. Submits AB meeting minutes to CTA, notifies CTA of changes in AB composition. Ensures project’s organizational documents are up to date and submitted to CTA. Signs a new Affiliation Agreement when there is a change in AB leadership.
2. Operations: In concert with the AB, ensures that project staff and volunteers are following all CTA policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Affiliation Agreement, the Fiscal Sponsorship Policies and Procedures document, and the Employee Handbook and Personnel Procedures. Submits an annual report of project activities to CTA. Submits online, email, and print fundraising campaigns to CTA for approval. Notifies CTA of upcoming special events. Reads and responds to CTA communications in a timely manner.
3. Financial: In concert with AB, monitors project’s financial health. Works with AB and CTA to submit an annual budget. Tracks project expenses. Reviews monthly financial statements provided by CTA. Approves all project expenses and deposits. Submits grant applications to CTA for review 15 days in advance of due date.
4. Staff: Ensure all staff and volunteers have completed mandatory training. If project has paid staff, Project Manager approves employee time records and paid time off requests. Completes annual performance reviews for all paid staff.
Required Qualifications & Relevant Experience
● Interest in Gayogohó:nǫˀ (Cayuga) language and culture
● Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated success in engaging external and internal stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes
● Exceptional problem-solving and organizational skills, including reliability and attention to detail
● Interest in gaining fundraising experience, including grant writing
● Accounting and budgeting experience
● Proficiency in MS Office software, including Excel and Word, QuickBooks or similar, and other electronic tools to successfully and efficiently conduct tasks
Preferred Qualifications:
● Preference given to applicants with Indigenous cultural fluency based on lived or work experience
● Website development and desktop publishing skills
● Successful fundraising experience, including grant writing
● Experience supervising others with an emphasis on mentoring and professional growth
● Experience in non-profit organizational culture
