Phlebotomist IJob DescriptionSummary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
Update patient information as needed.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and courteously.
Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all physicians' orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels are 100% correct against script.
Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples at the required temperature.
Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department training sessions.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.
Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
0-2 years of experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
1+ year of experience with hard sticks.
Work EnvironmentThis position is based in Ithaca, NY. The role is stationary, located at the PSC on the second floor. Ideally, candidates would be local to the area to minimize travel.
