It serves as the home Department for the Graduate Field of Microbiology (with 50 affiliated faculty members) and provides a center of expertise for numerous aspects of microbial biology. The faculty and staff offer advanced courses for both undergraduate and graduate students.What You Will DoYou will work in the lab of Dr. Joseph E. Peters in the Department of Microbiology. Research focuses on deciphering mechanisms in genome stability and evolution in bacteria and uses this information to develop genetic tools. You will manage and participate in ongoing projects adapting novel types of Tn7-like elements as tools for genome modification in all domains of life. Other duties include:Designing cloning and assembly strategies for producing DNA reagents to adapt natural transposition systems for genome modification.Conducting laboratory molecular genetic and biochemical experiments using existing or newly constructed reagents.Providing overall maintenance of the research lab, including delegating and overseeing lab cleaning assignments for other lab members.Keeping detailed, accurate records, procedures, and results of experimental activities.Performing complex library and internet searches to support ongoing or future research projects in areas of interest to the Principal Investigators.What We NeedWe are looking for a talented individual that excels at building and maintaining effective relationships with diverse stakeholders. We need someone interested in DNA replication, recombination and repair. Additionally, we need someone who has the following:Associate's degree in molecular microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related fields and 2+ years of experience in research and development related to the disciplines above or the equivalent combination of both education and experience.Proficiency in basic computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) and the use of online data-sharing tools (e.g., Dropbox, Google Docs).Proficiency in contemporary methods of molecular cloning / recombineering and gene assembly technologies.Proficiency in standard microbiology techniques and molecular microbiology.Experience in data collection and analysis, using basic statistical tools for analyzing data.Experience preparing written summaries and final reports.Knowledge of standard laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.Ability to lift 20 pounds.Visual concentration, attention to detail, and manual dexterity are required. Must be able to work irregular hours occasionally.Ability to keep equipment, materials, and lab organized.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact with technical personnel.Ability to work independently and take initiative.Must be personable, flexible, and take pride in their work.Possess excellent organizational skills.Ability to pay attention to detail.Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, outside clientele, and staff.Ability to create an inclusive, high-quality, and respectful work environment both in a team setting and independently to achieve departmental and university goals.Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:Previous hands-on experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, DNA sequencing technologies, and data handling.Experience with protein isolation using chromatography and carrying out protein activity / enzyme kinetics assays, especially involving protein-DNA interactions.Experience with next-generation sequencing technologies and data processing.This position is full-time (39 hours/week) and will be located in Ithaca, New York.
