Community Compost Company collects food scraps in the Hudson Valley and Northern NJ. We are leading the region in the development of a systems approach to food waste reduction, collection, and local processing. The material we collect is brought to local farm sites and made into compost, which will go back to the earth to restore soil quality for the myriad of attributes that it offers the environment. The finished compost is sold through our brand Hudson Soil Company.

We are seeking a Production Assistant to execute production of Community Compost Company’s finished compost products, and assist the site operator with various tasks. We currently produce organic compost, vermicompost, and liquid compost extract bagged/bottled and bulk. The schedule is currently 15-25 hours per week depending on the season.

Specialty & Bagged Production

-Oversee maintenance of vermicompost system: feeding worms, harvesting, screening, bin maintenance and bagged inventory

-Operate skid steer bucket loader to feed worms

-Work in conjunction with the sales team to plan and process orders in a timely manner

-Process orders of bagged compost and vermicompost products

-Operate semi-automated bagging machine

-Execute production of liquid compost extracts and maintenance of production equipment

-Assist in coordinating the distribution of products to retail locations via in-house deliveries or 3rd party delivery service

-Deliver orders as needed within the region via box truck, flatbed or dump truck

-Maintain inventory system of products and production supplies

-Troubleshoot systems/equipment as needed (bagger, vermicompost bin, etc.)

Site Operations

-Assist site operator with weekly compost pile build, including but limited to, watering material and removing aerated static pile pipes

-Assist with taking compost pile temperatures and data collection

-Remove contaminants and other debris from compost site

-Pick up feedstocks such as wood chips and leaves using company dump truck

-Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage barn

-Plant and maintain garden beds around compost facility

Requirements/Qualifications:

-Comfort operating equipment such as our skid steer and bagging machine

-Valid drivers’ license and clean driving record, for insurance purposes

-Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work outside, year round

-Ability to do physical labor for the whole shift

-Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

-Understanding of equipment and production safety protocols

-Experience maintaining inventory systems

-Proficient in GSuite, spreadsheets and comfort with using technology such as tablets for record keeping

-Team player; experience working on teams

-Experience working on a farm or in landscaping is a plus

-Understanding of gardening/farming practices and use of soil products or willingness to learn
