Hold valid New York State School Administrative Certification

Minimum of 7 years teaching experience; prior administrative experience preferred

Evidence of strong instructional leadership that results in a positive and engaging environment staff and students geared toward sustained student achievement.

Experience and knowledge working with students with special needs. Familiar with state regulations regarding students classified by the district CSE.

Knowledge of or successful experience at the high school level

Well versed in NYSED high school graduation requirements

Performance Responsibilities:Administer and implement the school and district initiatives

Provide leadership in initiating, evaluation and revising school operating practices to achieve and maintain an efficient school

Perform as a visible and effective leader in both long range planning and day-to-day operations of the high school, including school-wide and individual student management programs.

Advocate and sustain a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth

Evaluate and approve or recommend modifications to new or existing programs and submit their proposals to the principal

Resolve conflicts or grievances and settle disputes between students, teachers, parents or combinations thereof

Assist in screening, interviewing and recommending candidates for positions within the school and District

Communicates clearly and effectively with students, parents, staff, administration and community members

Clearly articulate the goals and philosophy of the school and District

Assist in the interpretation and administration of school policy, regulations and negotiated contracts

Assist in yearly teacher evaluation and provide guidance to and manage staff

Assist with student disciplinary duties as well as student activities

Responsible for principal’s duties in the absence of the principal

Performs tasks as assigned by the building principal

The successful candidate will assist the principal in the planning, staffing, budgeting, and evaluation of the program. The high school assistant principal has primary responsibility for implementing the Code of Conduct and assisting in creating and implementing the master schedule.QUALIFICATIONS:

REPORTS TO: Principal RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will assist the principal in the following areas:

Curriculum Development, Supervision and Evaluation:

Understanding school curriculum, ensuring teaching of the written curriculum, and helping staff use curriculum resources

Participate in and/or leading curriculum development activities commensurate with school and district goals

Provide opportunities and encouragement for staff to increase program expertise

Identifies curricular and extra curricular needs by analyzing current programs and student achievement

Regularly using the results of the student assessment data to identify problems and implement program improvements

Student Assessment and Monitoring:

Emphasizing student achievement as the primary outcome of schooling

Systematically assesses and monitors student progress using objective and verifiable information whenever possible

Works with staff to systematically identify and respond to at risk students; making referrals to appropriate community agencies when needed

Provides meaningful information to parents and others regarding student progress

Maintaining policies and practices for grading, reporting, and promoting

Nurturing a Strong Building Culture and Positive Student and Staff Relations:

Models restorative and trauma-informed practices

Models and facilitates good human relations skills; effectively interacts with others

Solicits information from school personnel and community in gauging the school climate

Recognizes efforts of students and teachers

Promotes the improvement of student and staff self-images

Communicates high expectations for both staff and students and provides appropriate motivation to reach expectations

Attends special events held to recognize student achievement and attends school sponsored activities

Fosters collegial relationship with and among teachers and staff

Serves as school activity coordinator: pictures, assemblies, etc

Establishing an Effective Workplace:

Develops and maintains positive staff morale

Implements discipline that is consistent with the code of conduct and promotes orderliness and student learning

Defines and articulates a school philosophy with vision through board adopted goals and administrative recommended objectives

Conduct meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school

Protects instructional time by minimizing interruptions to the instructional process

Coordinates teacher and student schedules to promote maximum learning and minimize conflict

Maintain high visibility in the school

Provides for adequate supervision and acceptable student behavior at all school functions planned and operated by school personnel

Provides orientation for newly assigned staff members and assists in their professional development

Staff Supervision, Personnel Evaluation:

Supervise instructional, teacher assistants, clerical staff, support staff and classroom volunteers within the building

Implement the district wide personnel annual professional performance review

Assists in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, and evaluating of the school’s professional, teaching assistants, and support staff

Makes personnel assignments based on a knowledge of employees abilities, qualifications, past performances, and school needs

Communications, Community Relations:

Listens and responds appropriately to staff, student, and community concerns

Respects differences of opinions and fostering open communications among staff

Develops communications that reflect and support management team decision in the implementation of school board policies

Communicating effectively with students; individually and in groups

Speaks and writes effectively

Keeps the superintendent and other appropriate central office administrators informed of school activities and problems such as transportation, special services, etc

Communicates and works with central office and other principals to share ideas, problems, expertise, and personnel

Interacts with school district and parent groups to promote positive outcomes

Encourages parent visits and involvement in decision making

Keeps the community informed about school activities through newsletters, news releases, and attendance at parent meetings, etc.

Effectively utilizes community resources and volunteering to promote student learning

Decision Making and Problem Solving:

Considers research when making decisions

Considers alternative and consequences in the decision making process

Makes decisions in a timely fashion and maximizes decisions effectiveness by follow-up actions

Clearly communicates decisions and rationale to all affected

Seeks information from appropriate sources and strives for consensus in the decision making process

Identifies problem areas and seeks solutions before crisis situations develop

Effectively delegates decision making and problem solving to appropriate personnel

Implements needed change with appropriate support staff, students, and community

Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal or assistant principal

Building Management, Recordkeeping, Financial Management:

Establishes and maintaining rules and procedures for student and staff safety

Promotes an aesthetically pleasing environment in the school

Assists in monitoring plant, office, and equipment maintenance

Assists in promoting timely repair of school facilities and equipment

Effectively copes with crises and emergencies

Assists in maintaining accurate personnel, student, and fiscal records

Assists in preparing accurate budgets and effectively monitors expenditures

Prepares required district reports accurately and efficiently

Anticipates future building and equipment needs; plans appropriately to remedy

Manages the daily use of school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes
