No County Rockland Street Address Bear Mountain State Park, Trailside Museums & Zoo 4 Fort Clinton Way City Bear Mountain State NY Zip Code 10911 Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55b/c, candidates must meet the open-compettitve minimum qualifications for this position.The qualifications are:Four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education AND one year of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.Substitution: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental education, environmental interpretation, environmental science, natural history, natural sciences, or a closely related field may substitute for four years of the general experience.Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.Additional Comments:For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non- competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Duties Description Under the direction of the Environmental Educator 2, the Environmental Educator 1 will oversee educational programs within various parks in the Palisades Region. A primary responsibility will be coordination of the Harriman State Park Regional Nature Museums, a summer program of Trailside Museums & Zoo (Trailside) entering its 105th year. Additional duties include developing environmental programming & public events; coordinating, recruiting, and teaching school groups and other audiences; providing impromptu pop-up programs at park facilities, and supervision of seasonal staff. This role will also require coordinating and supporting environmental educational programs at Trailside and at other parks in the region. The Environmental Educator 1 is responsible for: Four Regional Nature Museums in Harriman State Parko Overall coordination of the Regional Nature Museums, under supervision of the EE2. It is expected this will be the incumbents full-time responsibility from early June to late August. o Hiring, training, and supervising seasonal education staff (typically 8 people) for June-August season.o Developing, conducting, publicizing, and evaluating environmental education programing at the museums.o Preparing lesson plans/activities for a wide range of ages and groups and developing teaching aids.o Serving as primary contact between the Regional Nature Museums and summer group camps in Harriman State Park, the programs primary audience. o Coordinating/scheduling with camp staff for camper visits to the museums as well as educator field trips to the group camps. o Working with Trailside Museum and Zoo staff on administrative aspects of the program, including hiring paperwork, reporting hours for payroll, and purchasing supplies. o Coordination of museum exhibit animal permitting requirements, collection, and care with Trailside Zookeeping personnel. o Upkeep of museum grounds and facilities in coordination with Trailside and Group Camp maintenance staff.o Development of social media postings to highlight museum activities and augment in-person education. o Evaluating the effectiveness of programs and revising and modifying content in response to program needs, changes, deficiencies, and needs of particular groups. Educational Duties when the Regional Nature Museums are closed, September-May. o Under guidance of the EE2, support environmental education programming at Trailside and throughout the region.o Develop and prepare curricula for the Regional Nature Museum program. o In coordination with the EE2 and Trailside office staff, recruit and hire seasonal staff for the Regional Nature Museums.o Work with representatives from schools, colleges, organizations, and the public to promote environmental education at park facilities. o Assist planning and fulfillment of Trailside and other park public events. o In collaboration with the Palisades Park Conservancy Inc., pursue and develop grant applications to support the Regional Nature Museum Program. Additional Comments The posted hiring rate is the sum of statutory hiring rate of ($50,678) and location rate of ($3,087).OPERATING NEEDS: Daytime, weekend, holiday, and evening work is required. Must have ability to work with groups of all ages; special focus or experience in early childhood education preferred. Must have ability and willingness to handle and care for live animals.
