HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATORFT/TEMPORARYNE - LEVEL 8SALARY: $19.45GENERAL DEFINITION: Performs difficult work as a Heavy Equipment Operator.SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the direction of the Construction Superintendent and/or the Assistant Construction Superintendent.SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.DUTIES:Operates various types of heavy equipment.

Operates motor graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders 1-3 yard capacity, loader-backhoe, steel and sheep-foot rollers earth compacting types, earth moving scrapers, semi-tractor/trailers, dump and water trucks and other specialty equipment in carrying out various road projects to the required specifications and grades.

Operates motor grader, earth moving scrapers and other construction equipment units to push, pull and excavate dirt, backfill compact, grade and level earth to fine grade specifications on road construction projects.

Make necessary equipment adjustments for proper positioning and work normally without stopping the unit. This includes the positioning and repositioning of buckets or tilt attachments with the use of levers and/or foot pedals.

Assist the Heavy Equipment Mechanic in performing routine maintenance of equipment.

Clean interior of equipment, lubricate, refuel, grease, clean exterior equipment of excess oil or spills.

Identify warning signals of heavy equipment to explain problem to mechanic.

Report any mechanical failures to mechanic for repair and/or replacement.

Performs safety inspection of equipment.

Conducts visual inspections by walking around each piece of equipment and identify any items needing attention.

Maintains a record of such inspections.

Knowledgeable and skilled to safely operate any heavy equipment without harm to surrounding environment and workers.

Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must have knowledge in operating one or more types of heavy equipment, fairly complex machinery for excavating, backfilling, grading or leveling earthwork to the required specifications. Must have knowledge and ability to follow grade stakes while the machine is in motion. Must have knowledge and skills on the limits, safe operating range and/or capacity of any heavy equipment. Ability to operate different classes of dump, water and transport trucks that require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to drive legally over State and BIA controlled roads. Be able to interpret construction staking and other construction information. Have practical knowledge of construction materials, soils, and soil moisture relationship.TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED with at least two (2) years of work experience in various construction projects.LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred, OR a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Must have no DUI/DWI convictions within the past three (3) years. No drug/alcohol-related convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. Position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment. Must have own reliable transportation to and from project sites. Work is performed entirely outdoors, often in open Operator’s seat or platform on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces and rough terrain. Exposure to harsh elements including wind, rain, snow, dust, heat, cold, equipment noise, vibrations, and fumes. Work entails exposure to hazards common to the construction industry. Must be physically able to lift and carry 50 lbs. without assistance.
