What You Will DoThis position will be filled at either the Scientist 3/4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dynamic Structure Design, Engineering, and Vessel Operations (J-2) Group is looking for an experienced Hydrodynamic and Structural Analyst to support the group's diverse analysis and design responsibilities. Put your scientific talents to good use by joining J-2, a world-class R&D group that supports the Laboratory's mission of Stockpile Stewardship.The selected candidate will work within our group's multi discipline engineering teams by performing static and dynamic analysis for structures, fatigue and detailed stress analysis, and shock and fragment evaluations on impulsively loaded structures and components. This will include performing numerical engineering analysis such as finite element analysis (FEA) using ABAQUS software, Hydrocode analysis using codes such as Autodyne or CTH, and design visualization using CAD based modeling in packages such as Solid Works and/or CREO. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to interface with multiple programs as well as field testing and diagnostics to validate models.What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Scientist 3 ($122,300 - 206,300)Analysis: Demonstrated experience with Implicit and Explicit Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods and tools (e.g. ABAQUS, ANSYS, LS-DYNA) and/or Hydrodynamic analysis tools (e.g. CTH, AUTODYN). Demonstrated experience performing classical and numerical engineering analysis of simple and complex structures, systems and components. Thorough understanding of the scientific method in developing innovative concepts, theories, methods, techniques and approaches to address specialized problems.Design: Working knowledge and experience in design drafting practices, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and development of engineering specifications. CAD experience with design packages such as CREO or Solid Works, experience in developing engineering specifications, and applying of consensus codes such as ASCE, ACI, AISC, and ASME.Communication Skills: Leads in communicating results of technical R&D including presentations, publications, reports and technical products. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and present technical issues, both verbally and in written form, to an audience with various technical backgrounds, as well as experience providing technical direction, mentoring and coordinating/monitoring the work of others.Desired Qualifications:Experience working to and thorough knowledge of LANL institutional engineering policy.Experience using FEA software to efficiently inform design decisions.Experience with Impulsively loaded structuresAdditional Job Requirements for Scientist 4 ($146,800 - $254,700) :In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:Analysis: Advance knowledge utilizing Implicit and Explicit Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods and tools (e.g. ABAQUS, ANSYS, LDYNA) for complex structures, and/or Eulerian or coupled Eulerian/Lagrangian Finite Element methods and software (e.g. CTH, ANSYS-AUTODYN).Leadership: Demonstrated experience in mentoring of personnel, contributing to large-scale technical projects to solve national challenges.
