Job Title : R&D TechnicianReports To: Director, Research & DevelopmentMajor Focus : Responsible for supporting research initiatives focused on innovation in Clean Energy applications. Construction, operation, improvement, and and maintenance of apparatus for thermal, chemical, and electrochemical processing of advanced materials. Execution of test and experimental plans defined by scientific staff. Analysis and synthesis of data and reporting to Project Managers/Project Teams.Key Responsibilities:
Support scientific staff in design, construction, and operation of apparatus and equipment for advanced material synthesis and characterization.
Execute experimental and test plans according to written or verbal protocols.
Compile, analyze, and convey results of testing and analysis to internal stakeholders.
Troubleshoot mechanical and electronic devices and apparatus.
Major Challenges:
Time and effort management of multiple, ongoing, hands-on tasks germane to disparate technologies, apparatus, and methods.
Execution of complex experimental and testing protocols against time-bound milestones.
Expected Performance Outcomes:
Smooth operation and limited downtime of synthesis, test, and analysis apparatus and equipment.
Regular reporting of analyzed test results within one week of test conclusion.
Maintenance and updates to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs) following Mott’s ISO procedures.
Required Experience :
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or other field relevant to advanced materials or electrochemical devices preferred.
2+ years in a role requiring daily hands-on work in a fabrication, manufacturing, or research capacity
Technical Knowledge/Skills :
Knowledge of and adherence to safe laboratory work practices.
Understanding of mechanical design principles and ability to interpret and analyze technical drawings and blueprints.
Basic machining abilities including thread tapping, surface grinding, material sectioning, assembly.
Grasp of fluid handling principles and associated apparatus including pumps, valves, gauges, tubing, and fittings.
Knowledge of electrical and electronics principles and components including wiring, terminals, distribution blocks, and power supplies.
Non-Technical Skills:
Attention to detail, particularly in executing and writing test protocols and in data acquisition and analysis.
Persistence when faced with setbacks. Resourcefulness when facing unanticipated challenges.
Ability to communicate results, issues, and ideas clearly and concisely in written and spoken English.
Self-directed problem-solving initiative when confronting unexpected results or equipment issues.
