Position Title: Lifeguard (Per Diem) Campus: Farmington Department: Fitness and Recreation Center - FHFCR Bargaining Unit: Temp Salary Band/Wage Band: $14.15 - $14.65 per hour Location: Farmington ME Statement of Job: The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking five (5) lifeguards to work at the Fitness and Recreation Center (FRC). The primary responsibility of a lifeguard is to keep the pool area safe and enjoyable for everyone. Candidates must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. Lifeguards must be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and able to work with diverse populations. Lifeguards must be able to enforce pool policies and be able to communicate effectively why policies are in place. This work schedule is on an as-needed basis, not to exceed twenty (20) hours per week. Essential Duties

Scans the aquatics facility at all times and refrains from socializing while guarding.

Communicates and enforces all aquatic facility and pool policies and rules in a personable and professional manner.

Enforces all rules and regulations of the aquatics facility to maintain safety at all times.

Wears appropriate Aquatic facilities attire.

Provides necessary care in any emergency.

Documents any incidents and/or injuries.

Responds to unsafe conditions as it relates to the pool and pool deck.

Attends scheduled staff meetings and in-service training, when available, as this is a per diem position.

Conducts pool inspections, completes pool chemical tests, and records findings.

Assists with solving FRC patrons' issues, and problems or seeking out supervisory support.

Completes necessary opening and closing procedures when required for the scheduled shift.

Provides professional and positive customer service to all FRC patrons.

Qualifications:

Required Competencies

Problem Solving and Decision Making

Customer Services - Excellent customer service skills

Safety Skills - Basic principles and practices of safety in an aquatic facility

Communications – Excellent verbal and written communication and is able to follow instructions.

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent

Must hold current Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certifications (within 30 days of employment)

Preferred Qualifications

Previous lifeguard experience

Knowledge of c ampus r ecreation general user guidelines
