Position Purpose: Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, delivering activities, and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills. Qualifications: Must be 16 years of age or a high school graduateMust be able to be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPRMust submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of workAbility to interact with all age levels of children Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Understanding of the development needs of youth and a strong desire to work with children in a mentoring roleAbility to relate to youth and adults in a positive mannerDemonstrated knowledge and skill in program areas Responsibilities: Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their camper group with activities and throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomesApply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youthResponsible for leading or assisting with the teaching activitiesMaintain high stands of health and safety in all activities for campers and staffA role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behaviorRepresent the camp when interacting parents or community partnersProvide supervision for campers while campers are transported to and from camp or during scheduled field trips off camp propertyFollow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp Work Environment & Physical Demands:Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniquesVisual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers Some physical requirements of this position include standing, running, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and demonstrate sports activities. Requires a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/program.
