Temple Emmanuel of the Pascack Valley is a warm and vibrant Conservative synagogue in New Jersey, dedicated to providing a welcoming environment for prayer, learning, and community. We are seeking a responsible, skilled, and proactive Superintendent of Facilities to ensure our building and grounds remain safe, clean, and in excellent working order for all congregants and visitors.
Position Summary
The Superintendent of Facilities is responsible for the daily maintenance, cleanliness, repair, and general operations of the synagogue building, grounds, and equipment. This individual plays a key role in supporting religious services, educational programs, lifecycle events, and community gatherings by ensuring all facilities are prepared and functioning efficiently.
Key Responsibilities:
Facilities Maintenance & Operations
Oversee and perform routine maintenance (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting).
Manage preventative maintenance schedules and respond promptly to repair needs.
Manage janitorial staff to ensure the classrooms and synagogue are clean, organized, and presentable at all times.
Maintain inventory of supplies and coordinate with vendors for deliveries and service.
Event & Religious Service Support
Set up and break down rooms for services, meetings, programs, and events (e.g., moving tables, chairs, audio-visual needs).
Assist with preparing spaces for Shabbat, holidays, and life-cycle events (e.g., High Holidays, bar/bat mitzvahs, weddings).
Ensure the building is open, properly heated/cooled, and safe during events.
Safety & Security
Conduct regular building inspections to identify safety issues and hazards.
Collaborate with security staff and contractors to maintain a safe environment.
Respond to emergency situations promptly and effectively.
Staff & Vendor Coordination
Supervise custodial/janitorial staff.
Schedule and oversee work performed by external contractors and service providers.
Coordinate closely with synagogue clergy, staff, and volunteers to support operations.
Qualifications:
Minimum 3–5 years of experience in building maintenance or facilities management.
Strong knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, and general repairs.
Experience working in a religious, school, or nonprofit environment preferred.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and perform physical labor as needed.
Flexible schedule with availability for weekends, evenings, and Jewish holidays.
Familiarity with Jewish customs, holidays, and sensitivity to religious needs is strongly preferred.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
