Health Benefits Associates is a full-service health insurance brokerage, exclusively focused on health insurance for individuals, families, businesses and Medicare beneficiaries. We do not offer other lines of insurance, such as auto, home, or property and casualty insurance.
Our family-owned business was founded in Reno, Nevada and has been servicing the Northern Nevada Community for over 25 years. We have grown in the last 10 years to include additional locations throughout the Northern Nevada and North Lake Tahoe areas. We currently have 5 offices: Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Fernley and Truckee, CA.
We are seeking a highly motivated and customer-oriented individual to join our Fernley team as a broker in training. You will primarily work out of our Carson City office but will be expected to commute to our Reno location 2-3 days per week for training and team building.
As a brokerage, we work with every health insurance company operating in Nevada to find coverage that meets our client’s needs. We’re not restricted to working with one or a small selection of companies (as is the case with auto and homeowners’ insurance). We assist clients with comparing benefits and plan selections, as well as researching their doctors and prescriptions. This process helps narrow the options to the coverage that fits them. We are paid a commission by the insurance companies, and this does not change the cost the client pays. It’s the same price if they don’t use a broker.
What you can expect in the broker in training role at Health Benefits Associates:
- Provide administrative support primarily for your direct supervisor and occasionally to other licensed agents. This includes creating quotes through an online platform and communicating with insurance companies regarding administrative tasks.
- Answer and direct phone calls of clients and vendors.
- Greet and assist clients/visitors in the office.
- Organize and schedule appointments and confirm meetings.
- Carry out administrative duties for the office to include but not limited to filing, copying, binding, scanning, ordering supplies, sending thank you cards, etc.
- Input client data into an online Customer Relationship Management system while maintaining confidentiality.
- Assist in processing paperwork, including employee enrollments and terminations for group clients.
This job requires you to quickly learn and use online systems such as quote tools, online databases, insurance carrier websites, digital meeting platforms, and so on. If this is difficult, we recommend passing on this position.

As a W-2, full-time employee you would be eligible for the following benefits:
- Starting Salary: $23/ hour
- Health Benefits Associates offers medical, dental, and vision effective the first of the month following 60 days of employment. The company contributes 70% towards employee’s premium and 30% towards dependents. If you elect an HSA compatible plan, Health Benefits Associates will match up to the first $1,000 of your contribution.
- You will be eligible for our 401K and Life and Disability products following 6 months of employment. Health Benefits Associates will match up to the first 6% of your 401K contribution.
- Health Benefits Associates offers vacation, sick leave and unpaid time off. We prefer employees to use these between late December through September. October through mid-December is our busiest season and the best opportunity to earn commissions.
Skills and Experience
- Fluent in English, bilingual in Spanish is a plus
- Minimum of two years of work experience in customer service or related field
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and general computer use
- Experience with CRM databases is preferred, but not required
- Ability to learn new online systems (training provided)
- High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred but not required
Weekly day range:
Monday to Friday – 8:00am – 5:00pm (during the off season we may leave at 4:30pm)
Work Location:
Carson City, NV 89705 - This is not a work from home or remote position.
IMPORTANT – You must be willing to commute to our Reno location 2-3 days per week for training and team building.
