OverviewThe Computing and Information Technology Directorate works to re-imagine how digital technologies can simplify the research experience, enable data-driven insights for decision makers, and accelerate PNNL’s research missions. CIT helps connect staff to systems while enabling a broader research computing ecosystem to improve productivity and provide a sense of community.ResponsibilitiesOpportunities abound in our intern projects; you will engage with multidisciplinary groups across the Lab and explore various computing career options. Assignments are flexible and range from 10-12 weeks with the possibility of extension. You will tackle one of our challenging intern projects, teamed with fellow interns and paired with mentors and project stewards. You will be an active contributor playing a central role in the design and development of critical solutions.Our intern program includes:

Strategically important and challenging projects in a team environment.

Briefings and final presentation with our CIO and weekly meetings with members of our senior leadership team.

Numerous personal & career development opportunities, including a full-time mentor, coaching sessions and workshops, lab tours, and collaborating with a diverse range of PNNL staff, including senior leadership, research scientists, and junior engineers.

Active social events planning to ensure you never have a dull moment.

Previous projects include:

Implementing an open-source ML workflow tool to enable research projects to leverage our ML platforms and to automate their ML workflows. This included demonstrating the tool and onboarding research projects.

Implementing a private Generative AI environment to prototype examples of how these technologies may transform research processes.

Accelerating science by optimizing scientific codes and parallelizing them for supercomputers. This involves a high-performance coding bootcamp and collaborating with researchers to optimize their codes.

Implementing pre-defined cloud ‘blueprint’ templates to facilitate scientists and engineers being able to leverage cloud services on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.

Building CI/CD pipelines and working with teams of software engineers to migrate applications to these new pipelines.

You are a software developer, User Experience (UX), data, cyber, or IT engineer driven by a passion to continually learn and grow. If you are a developer or data engineer, you have experience in some of the following C#, C, JavaScript, SQL, JSON, React, R or jQuery.If a UX/Human Centered Design Engineer, you have a strong and demonstrable visual, interaction and graphic design skills with a design portfolio that showcases your work. You thrive in ambiguity. If it isn't defined you can design it, and overcome constraints to provide the best experience.If a Cyber or IT Engineer, you know about cloud migrations, cyber security practices and computing infrastructure Management. You also possess foundational knowledge configuration management and testing tools.Teams will be given project ownership and creativity is encouraged. You will be working with many people across the Lab on these projects, including executive management.We support hybrid work, supporting online and in-person interns. Candidates are strongly encouraged to commit to an in-person experience as feedback from former interns have highlighted the richness of the many in-person experiences.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have a high school diploma /GED or higher

Candidates must be degree-seeking undergraduate students enrolled at an accredited college or university

Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall cumulative GPA of 2.5

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in Computer Science, Human Centered Design, Data Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Electrical and Electronic Engineering or related field
