Refugee Community Educator

Overviewhe Refugee Community Educator will be responsible for developing and implementing health education programs specifically tailored to the unique needs and challenges faced by refugee populations. The Refugee Community Educator (RCE) will work closely with the Refugee Navigators, the University Campus Refugee Health Team, community organizations, including the Refugee Resettlement agencies, and individuals to deliver comprehensive health education initiatives, promote preventive care and help refugees make informed decisions regarding their health. Educational programs will be one-on-one and group sessions. This position will be an integrated part of the CHI Health clinic care team and will work directly with patients, and build and maintain relationships with community resource partners. Position may require evening and weekend schedules as program needs arise. Preferred experience working in the community in Proficiency in another language is highly desirable.Responsibilities

Participate as a full member of the clinic team, including attending team meetings and care conferences as appropriate.

Act as peer support and advocate for recently resettled refugee patients as they navigate the medical and social service system.

Develop culturally appropriate health education materials targeting refugee populations, considering their cultural backgrounds, languages, and specific health needs.

Deliver health education workshops and sessions: Organize and facilitate workshops, group sessions, and individual consultations to educate refugees on various health topics such as nutrition, hygiene, disease prevention, and chronic disease management.

Develop educational tools: Create culturally sensitive educational materials, including brochures, posters, visual aids, and multilingual resources, to support health education initiatives.

Support health literacy: Assist refugees in understanding medical terminology, navigating the healthcare system, interpreting health-related documents, and advocating for their health needs.

Collaborate with the clinic team and community organizations: Establish and maintain partnerships with the State Refugee Coordinator, Refugee Resettlement agencies, community organizations, and social service agencies to coordinate and enhance the delivery of health education programs. Attend the Refugee Health Collaborative, coalition and partner meetings as needed; identify gaps in community resources based on clinic patient needs.

Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness: Track and assess the impact of health education programs through data collection, surveys, and feedback to identify areas for improvement and ensure program effectiveness.

Maintain required records for the Refugee Health Promotion Program. Enter and maintain electronic health records, and other program documentation in a timely manner.

QualificationsRequired Education and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GEDProven experience working with refugee or immigrant populations, preferably in a health education capacity.Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training

Knowledge of refugee health issues, cultural sensitivity, and experience working within diverse communities.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with individuals from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Ability to develop and deliver educational materials and presentations in a clear and accessible manner.

Knowledge of the landscape of public benefits and community resources and how to facilitate individuals’ access to those resources.

Knowledge and skills in basic word processing required.

Knowledge of and practical use of good business English, spelling, arithmetic, practices and the ability to communicate effectively using written and verbal skills.

Strong organizational (time management) skills, and the ability to handle multiple priorities.

Exhibits professionalism and ability to build rapport and maintain relationships with patients/families, internal staff, and community based organizations.
