Recycling Works is a nonprofit organization bringing sustainable waste management practices to Missoula. We strive to offer professional and efficient environmental solutions that eliminate excess waste and safeguard Western Montana’s pristine beauty. Recycling Works provides glass recycling (our core offering), multi-stream recycling (including cardboard, paper, metal cans, and plastics), and organic waste composting. We ethically commit to serving our community and protecting the environment, with a percentage of our proceeds funding charitable causes. To date, we’ve recycled over 2.8 million pounds of glass and donated over $63,000 to support public education programs and housing initiatives in our community.

Position Summary
The Recycling Works Driver collects recyclable material from residential and commercial curbside clients while safely and efficiently operating equipment, including attached cargo trailers. The Driver supports the efforts of RW’s Operations Manager in tracking, updating, and communicating about routes and pickups to ensure excellent customer service. Additional duties include assisting in the efficient operation of community glass drop-off events across Western Montana (currently ten single-day weekend events per year). The Driver is additionally responsible for supporting tasks at Recycling Works’ materials yard, such as loading and receiving shipments, unloading and organizing curbside materials, and maintaining a safe, efficient, and organized workspace.
The ideal Recycling Works Driver is self-driven, attentive to detail, a skilled problem solver, and enthusiastic about collaborating as a core member of the Recycling Works team. This position reports to the Operations Manager regarding day-to-day activities, with larger-scale yard projects led by the Executive Director. Some evenings and weekends may be required to support organizational projects and events.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Materials Collection
Complete daily (M-TH) glass & multi-stream routes and weekly (F) organic waste collection routes from residential and commercial clients within designated pickup times, ensuring safe operation & efficient sorting of materials
Regularly unload collection materials from truck and trailers, ensuring an empty space prior to the next day’s route
Preview route beforehand to check for any bins needed for drop-offs for that day, and ensure bins going out in the field are clean and professional-looking; pick up bins as needed and store in proper area for later cleaning
Act as the primary driver for all drop-off events and regional partner collections, ensuring safe transportation between the event location and yard
Operate Bobcat Skid-Steer to assist with loading glass cullet into supersacks for transport (approx. 2-3x/month, typically spring through fall)
2. Customer Service
Foster & maintain professional interactions with clients & potential clients in the field
Accurately track, update, and communicate with the Operations Manager regarding client pickup status, collection issues, or other client needs
3. Contributing to Safe, Efficient Workspaces
Ensure vehicle is left in operational condition prior to shift’s end, including sufficient fuel levels, a clean and trash-free interior, & a clean exterior to keep sponsor logo bright and visible
Clean, organize, and inventory returned bins in a timely manner. Communicate with Operations Manager regarding supply needs
Maintain awareness of necessary vehicle repairs and maintenance, notifying Executive Director and/or Operations Manager of status
Regularly submit receipts (gas, safety equipment, etc.) to Operations Manager
Qualifications
A clean driving record including preferably 3+ years citation-free and NO DUIs
Previous experience driving a truck and cargo trailer preferred (CDL NOT required/needed)
Previous experience driving in inclement weather preferred
Strong problem-solving and time-management skills
Working Conditions
Full time, 40hrs/week (exempt)
Physical demands include: the ability to remain on one’s feet for extended periods, lift up to 50lbs, and enter & exit a Ford F-250 truck up to 200x per day
Must be able to tolerate inclement weather conditions. Chain usage is required at times during the winter
Occasional travel outside of Missoula required to support drop-off events (currently held on weekends in Seeley Lake and Hamilton)
Assist in occasional trailer maintenance, yard expansion, construction, or other projects as needed
Compensation & Benefits
$43,000-$48,000 annual salary (exempt) DOE
12 days Paid Time Off annually, with immediate accrual
