The successful candidate will work 30 hours per week (0.75 FTE ) in person at the MSUN campus in Havre, Montana. The position is professional and on a 10-month annual contract following the grant calendar which runs October through September.The LRI / NASNTI program provides grants and other assistance to non-tribal, Native American-serving institutions, to enable institutional improvement and to expand the capacity to serve American Indian students. The funds from this grant will be used to improve American Indian retention and degree completion through culturally appropriate models and strategies of mentoring, tutoring, teaching, and social engagement.The Counselor supports the efforts of the Little River Institute and MSU -Northern to provide a safe, healthy, and accessible environment for all students. As a NASNTI grant-funded position, the Counselor works specifically to support the personal, educational, and vocational development of Native American students attending MSU -Northern for the purpose of enhancing Native American student retention and persistence. The Counselor works very closely with the Assistant Dean of Students for Student Wellness & Leadership, the Director of Student Health Services, and with local behavioral health providers and responding agencies in the development and maintenance of comprehensive and holistic programs that support student well-being. The counselor provides specific, direct services, to include the provision of brief, short-term individual, group, and couples counseling; crisis intervention; campus mental health outreach, training, and program development; and serves as a resource liaison to other campus and community partners. The Counselor collaborates with the Division of Student Affairs, working closely with key stakeholders across campus to assist in the delivery of a comprehensive and culturally informed student life program. While the counselor will report to the Little River Institute Project Director, the Assistant Dean of Student Wellness & Leadership will provide clinical supervision.In 2015, MSU -N received a $1.9 million grant through the Native American Serving Nontribal Institutions ( NASNTI ) Program of the U.S. Department of Education. With that award, MSU -N established the Little River Institute (https://www.msun.edu/lri/index.aspx) : a student center, located in the Student Union Building and dedicated to the retention and completion rates of Native American students in higher education. Provide culturally informed mental health care to individual undergraduate and graduate students, groups, and communities within the University to improve mental health;

Develop and implement educational and outreach programs for the University community;

Assess mental health needs of the University community;

Provide consultation regarding mental health issues to broader campus community;

Provide counseling, crisis intervention, and overall clinical outreach and educational services to the University student community;

Provide crisis response and intervention;

Provide intake assessment and treatment planning;

Provide appropriate case management and record keeping;

Employ professional accepted and empirically supported best practice services;

Help students define goals, plan action, and gain insight into their personal development;

Serve on University committees as needed.

Master’s Degree in mental health counseling, clinical or counseling psychology or social work;

Ongoing progress towards licensure (post-degree supervision will be provided);

Demonstrated ability to properly handle confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Licensed in the state of Montana as an LCPC , LCSW , or psychologist by start date or within 6 months of hire.

1 year of experience in mental health counseling, assessment, and program development;

Demonstrated understanding of mental health challenges and issues among college students;

Demonstrated experience in program development and delivery;

Demonstrated experience in a college or university counseling center;

Demonstrated experience working with Native American clientele;

Demonstrated understanding of mental health challenges and issues among Native American college students;

Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work in a dynamic environment;

Demonstrated sound management and organizational skills;

Demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with diverse students, faculty, and staff;

Demonstrated literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications.
