Job Summary:
The primary duty of the dispatcher is to coordinate on-time pick-up and delivery of loads, which is imperative to the success of the company’s operations. The role of dispatcher is essential to keeping the business going. The dispatcher spends more than 50% of his or her time performing this duty, which is comprised of the following sub-duties: tracing loads/shipments; managing freight volume; and remotely monitoring equipment use to ensure maximum efficiency. In the performance of these duties, the dispatcher exercises independent judgement, largely without direct supervision, in determining when/where/how/and what is required to either pick up or deliver a load, which requires real-time decision-making by the dispatcher. In this capacity, dispatchers actively support the truck drivers in the performance of their duties.
Essential Functions:
Ensures all driver loads are covered and on time
Confirms drivers have the right equipment for their pick-ups
Requests needed paperwork for loads
Traces loads/shipments
Manages freight volume if issues arise
Monitors equipment to move it as quickly as possible to reduce per diem costs for empty equipment
Performs or serves as back up for yard checks
Issues keys, record sheets and credentials to drivers
Monitors on-time performance
Prepares tracking reports for customers
Issues disciplinary action for drivers that violate company policy; assists in decisions regarding hiring and firing of drivers as needed
Communicates with customers and customer service management regarding scheduling appointments and problems that arise with pick-up or delivery of loads; works to ensure customer is satisfied
Enters customer loads into system; updates loads when drivers call in
Coordinates with vendors for equipment repairs
Plans drivers’ dispatch, assigns loads to drivers according to business needs and driver capabilities
Communicates with drivers to provide dispatch instructions
Assists drivers in resolving complex issues
Communicates driver issues to supervisor; issues disciplinary action to drivers as needed
Coordinates with other terminals to meet customer needs and ensure all pick-ups are made
Prevents any unnecessary company charges or liabilities
Maintains record of mileage, fuel used, repairs made and other expenses
Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Experience in the intermodal transportation industry strongly preferred
Associates degree or equivalent combination of education and relative experience
Ability to use various computer systems
Excellent communication, both written and verbal
Ability to read and interpret business reports and daily logs
Ability to work under general supervision
Flexible; able to work in fast-paced environment
Ability to work long hours if necessary to handle special customer requests
Ability to exercise discretion and independent thinking regarding the general operation of the business
