We have long been associated with many of the most significant advances in eye health, and we believe we are well positioned to continue leading the advancement of eye health in the future.Objective : The R&D Test Engineer I, V&V shall be responsible for developing test methods and protocols, along with designing and assembling customized apparatuses, to facilitate the collection of data that supports feasibility research, verification testing, and validation testing for ophthalmic surgical devices. When the test apparatus requires automation, the R&D Test Engineer I, V&V shall individually leverage commercially available software tools, sensors, and actuators to facilitate the construction of the test apparatus and shall validate the algorithm and developed programs following B+L quality procedures. The individual shall perform and/or lead dry-run testing activities to assess the suitability of such methods, protocols, and apparatuses prior to their application and shall lead training activities to affect proper implementation and execution of testing per the test plan. The individual shall lead or assist with the management of test sample preparation, and as requested, shall directly support the execution of product testing efforts. Broadly, these tasks shall support test method development, design verification test execution, and/or competitive product performance analysis for new products or changes to existing products.Responsibilities : Determining objectives of test efforts based on reviews of design inputs, standards, and collaboration with Design Engineering and Design Quality team members. Designing/configuring test apparatuses to achieve required test objectives including the facilitation of safe/ergonomic execution of tests. Selecting appropriate sensors, actuators, and off-the-shelf components for the test apparatus. Using 3D CAD software such as Solidworks to design customized mechanical components for the test apparatus. Developing control algorithms for the automated test apparatus and using LabView or equivalent automation software to implement the control algorithm and to facilitate export of relevant data. Acquiring relevant materials through part suppliers, rapid prototyping service providers, and internal prototyping resources and fabricating test apparatuses. Completing relevant studies, including e.g. Gage Reliability and Repeatability studies, to demonstrate proper functioning of the test apparatus. Establishing documented calibration for measurement equipment and supporting activities required to maintain equipment in the calibrated state. Completing relevant documentation to demonstrate proper definition, validation, and control of test apparatuses intended to be used in verification or validation testing. Authoring test methods, test protocols, and test plans often based on review/enhancement to previously applied methods. Applying statistical tools and providing appropriate statistical rationales to support sample size requirements of such test plans and protocols. Collaborating and reaching consensus on test methods, protocols, and plans with key reviewers and approvers of controlled documents. Initiating and managing document approval workflows to facilitate the control of test methods, protocols, and plans. Managing internal and external activities associated with the fabrication and conditioning of test articles (e.g. sterilization, aging, simulated distribution). Conducting and documenting training of test technicians engaged in test plan/protocol execution. Executing or administering test protocols and generating required data records. Performing statistical data analysis on collected data. Drafting and/or peer reviewing test report documents and processing them through the review and approval workflow.To enable these activities, the R&D Test Engineer I, V&V must demonstrate a command understanding of the essential operating principals, benefits/weakness, and appropriate applications of various of electro-mechanical instrumentation and be capable of incorporating it in new applications. Very high attention to detail and adherence to compliance controls and to GLP and cGMP standards must be maintained for all work performed and records generated.Requirements :

Required Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Required. M.S. in Mechanical Engineering Preferred.

Required Experience: Demonstrated application of mechanical engineering instrumentation and component design know-how in the context of a prior engineering position, internship, collegiate research effort, or related engineering project including specific examples of developing customized data acquisition systems, closed loop controllers/robotics, and creating customized assemblies. Experience with traditional machining and additive machining (rapid prototyping) to create prototype parts and assemblies.

Preferred Experience: Two to Four years of test engineering experience involving the development and application of test protocols and customized test instrumentation to facilitate product verification, validation, or related safety/performance assessment in an environment conforming to GLP and/or to either ISO 13485 or CFR 821 for medical device design. Specific experience with developing custom virtual instruments using LabView software and associated data input/signal output hardware. Experience in using the full complement of electro-mechanical instrumentation including force gages, pressure transducers, accelerometers, sound measurement sensors, temperature transducers, humidity sensors, fluid velocity sensors, strain gages, multi-meters, oscilloscopes, stepper motors, relays, pneumatic actuators, electrical actuators, etc. in either an academic or industrial setting.

Required Skills/Qualifications: Proficiency using LabVIEW, Solidworks (or Inventor), and MS Office tools required. Minitab and computer programming language proficiency (e.g. C, Matlab, Python) strongly desired. Firmware programming skills desired. PLC or other automation controller programming skills desired.

Strong written and verbal comprehension and communication capabilities. High dexterity/visual acuity. Ability to work with small parts under microscope. Ability to select, program, and operate electronic test equipment, meters, scopes, etc. Ability to work independently and quickly learn/adapt to acquire new skills as projects demand. Physically able to lift light to moderate loads and periodically work for extended durations at a lab-bench as required.
