This position is an integral part of providing research and data support to Public Works and Mobility. The Chemist position performs sampling and laboratory analysis of wastewater, surface water, stormwater, and ground water in collaboration with wastewater treatment facilities operations and collection.Job Status: Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE) - Missoula Wastewater Division Chemists Unit Union affiliation Details: Priority s creening will begin onThursday, February 29, 2024 . Collect samples from a variety of sources including domestic and industrial wastewater, surface water, stormwater, and ground water.

Perform complex quantitative analysis on collected samples measuring physical, inorganic nonmetallic, aggregate organic, and microbiological properties, such as ammonia, suspended solids, pH, conductivity, nitrate, phosphorus, volatile acids, and other substances at both low and high levels.

Operate laboratory instruments for calibration, troubleshooting, and minor repairs, such as: auto-analyzer, spectrophotometer, pH and dissolved oxygen meters, etc.

Determine the types and frequency of required analysis according to Plant discharge permit.

Develop and maintain laboratory computer data management systems, test results, and other necessary databases and documentation to fulfill the laboratory QA program and discharge permit requirements.

Assist with pretreatment program sampling, inspections, and analysis.

Maintain laboratory procedures and equipment to required standards; maintain and order laboratory equipment and supplies.

Develop and research methods for expanding in-house testing capabilities; develop and conduct quality control testing to ensure validity to test data; perform tests for outside agencies.

Prepare spreadsheets and tables showing weekly, monthly, and annual testing statistics and averages; prepare reports noting and explaining exceptions to quality standards; evaluate process control data and participate in process control problem-solving.

Identify water quality and environmental violations.

Provide recommendations for plant operations based on analysis of test result data.

Perform other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of and the ability to learn municipal wastewater collection and treatment principles, techniques, and practices, including water quality sampling and testing methods, and occupational hazards and safety requirements.

Knowledge of chemical and biological processes used to analyze wastewater, biosolids, soil, surface water and industrial waste.

Skill in collecting samples and performing chemical content tests.

Skill in safely operating various laboratory equipment, including balances, meters, centrifuges, and spectrophotometers.

Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365 with the ability to learn job specific applications and equipment.

Skill in managing multiple projects with keen detail and accuracy, and the ability to prioritize tasks with shifting priorities and timeline demands.

Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.

Ability to develop standard laboratory operating procedures.

Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports, databases, and statistical information.

Ability to research, analyze, and provide solutions to various problems and situations.

Ability to learn Missoula Pretreatment Program policy and procedures.

Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures, including the ability to , interpret and apply Federal, State and Missoula Municipal Code wastewater treatment, water quality testing and environmental laboratory regulations.

Work Conditions:

Position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs. or less.

Work environment may involve occasional exposure to occupational hazards, chemicals, biohazards, and physical risks, including accessing sample sites such as: rivers, industrial drain fields, and municipal manholes, which require following basic safety precautions.
