DescriptionThis position is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the CAD technicians and Assistant Detailers in the Design Technology department within the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) global practice in Kansas City. The position responsibilities are in addition to regular design responsibilities. Specific areas of responsibility include the following:Leadership

Advocating for safety within the Design Technology Department.

Provide leadership to the team; direct and coordinate work assignments and review performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

Support in developing, maintaining, and communicating processes, tools, and organizational structures that best support T&D's business needs and profitability goals of T&D across all business lines with a focus on the Underground & Submarine Cables Department.

Manage department budget and expenditure of funds.

Supporting recruitment and retention strategies to maintain staff well-positioned for utilizing current and future technologies to support the profitable execution of projects.

Support Underground and Submarine Cables and Design Technology management in staff training programs, specifically for developing CAD staff into design-focused roles.

Driving a culture of quality and continual improvement.

Establish and communicate a vision for technology and staff that supports profitability growth within the changing business landscape and work with each department and section manager to develop short- and long-term goals supporting that vision.

Support client, project, and marketing teams in developing and presenting Burns & McDonnell technology capabilities, benefits, and challenges in an internal and external facing capacity.

Responsible for collaborating with business development managers, business line leads, project managers, and proposal production staff on proposals to secure work for the staff.

Personnel

Responsible for staff recruitment, development, training, and retention with a strong focus on Underground & Submarine Cables.

Responsible for interpreting the organization's policies, purposes, and goals to staff.

Assist in staff training, mentoring, and career development.

Recruit top talent as well as the engagement and retention of staff.

Organizing, leading, and conducting department staff's annual performance appraisal process.

Provide expert-level technical design guidance and support.

Technology & Innovation

Continue maintaining a culture of innovation and inspire staff to think creatively.

Use new and existing software to improve workflows for improved collaboration. (i.e. Bentley Open Roads, Autodesk Civil 3D, ArcGIS)

Mentor and encourage the development of innovative ideas, understanding how they fit into our Underground & Submarine Cables & Design Technology business plans.

Responsible for collaboration with project teams, project engineers, project management, and department managers to identify and implement new solutions to improve the efficiency and quality of deliverables.

Ability to attend and present at industry events to identify emerging industry trends and technologies.

Initiate and execute innovation initiatives to drive quality, efficiency, and profitability using CAD technologies.

Strategy

Support and engagement in the business line processes and projects of Underground & Submarine Cables to maintain billability and engagement.

Assist with building relationships and partnerships with external design technology vendors and recommend use cases supporting our business needs.

Support in the development and communication strategy for greater utilization of technology and staff as a revenue source outside of traditional roles.

Coordination with regional offices and Burns and McDonnell India to support department growth and business line needs.

Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

Organizational

Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.

Coordinating work for the department, including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure efficient, cost-effective staff utilization.

Implement, apply, and support company, global practice, and regional office programs and initiatives; successfully navigate and manage change within the section.

Interpreting policies, procedures, and goals of the organization to staff.

Assisting in the development and execution of the Kansas City T&D and Underground & Submarine Cables Business Plans.

Supporting diversity initiatives.

Supporting Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.

Recommending changes in the basic structure and organization of the department to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to it.

All Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of professional experience in the CAD industry or an Associate’s degree and seven (7) years of professional experience in the CAD industry or ten (10) years of related industry experience.

This role will require 50% billability.

Previous experience in linear design work or underground utility design is preferred.

Self-starter with proven experience establishing a vision, setting direction, and driving results.

Previous leadership and/or management experience is preferable.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.

Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.

Proven experience in proactive collaboration and team building.

Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.

Must be an expert in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
