Full-time position, under the supervision of the Chief Civil Litigator and the Chief In-House Counsel, provides assistance to the County Attorney's Office; prepares a variety of legal documents requiring knowledge of legal theory and procedures; performs legal research; and other duties as required. This position will also perform specifically delegated legal work for which a lawyer is responsible. The Paralegal position is distinguished from Legal Assistant positions by their expanded education, training, and desired specialized certification (PACE or NALA-CP/NALA-SCP).
Examples of Duties:
- Primary support staff position for union and civil litigation;
- Conducts legal research (Westlaw/Lexis proficiency) for legal staff from codes, digests and other legal publications and periodicals;
- Assists with various Board of County Commissioner matters;
- Prepares various legal documents including complaints, stipulations, orders, points and authorities, subpoenas and declarations, utilizing knowledge of statutes, civil procedures, state, federal and departmental policies;
- Assists lawyers during trial, arbitration, grievance hearings, and other formal hearings.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree or certificate in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice or closely related field; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training totaling four (4) years.
Required Certifications:
- Notary Public within six (6) month probationary period, if applicable;
- Possession of a valid Montana driver's license.
Desired Qualifications: (Note: not required.)
- Preference will be given to applicants with professional experience in labor-related issues, Federal and State Court Civil Litigation, and Montana Labor Law.
- Certification as a paralegal through an approved program such as:
PACE Certification (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam Credentialing); or
NALA CP Certification (National Association of Legal Assistants Certified Paralegal); or
NALA ACP Certification (National Association of Legal Assistants Advanced Certified Paralegal). Note: The NALA CP Certification was formerly known as the NALA CLA.
