Join the talented, engaged and inclusive workforce dedicated to creating a better Minnesota.The DNR is seeking to fill one (1) seasonal, full-time Laborer-Trades & Equipment (LTE) position at the Lac qui Parle Wildlife Work Area, near Watson, MN. This position will provide lead direction to field staff in daily work plans and equipment maintenance, provide the specialized equipment operation and labor skills necessary to assist with construction, restoration, and enhancement projects on wildlife management areas and other public lands throughout the 9-county area. The anticipated work schedule will generally be Monday through Thursday with seasonal dates from early-March until early-December each calendar year.This position specializes in habitat and facility management work on prairie, wetland, and forest habitats. Activities include but are not limited to: prescribed burning; fire break construction; prairie restoration, enhancement, and management; wetland development and construction; woody vegetation removal; forest stand management; food plot establishment; conservation grazing infrastructure construction; facility and access development and maintenance; boundary development; site clean-up; maintaining and repairing DNR owned buildings along with the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to accomplish these activities.Responsibilities include:

To operate, service and maintain small, medium, and heavy equipment as a primary duty to accomplish wildlife habitat management objectives on wildlife management areas, user facilities, and other public owned lands throughout the work area to allow for safe and high-quality public user experiences.

To apply technical knowledge and expertise to develop and serve Wildlife facilities, perform inspections, and minor repairs to fleet equipment, implements, and small engines; and fabrication of tools or items for field work, organization of buildings, purchasing, picking up and receiving shipments.

Represent Fish and Wildlife in a positive and professional manner while providing information to the public.

Participate in safety and other job-related training.

To implement wildlife population management programs and policies safely so that maximum benefits for wildlife and the public result.

Minimum Qualifications

Position requires a Class A Driver‘s License (CDL), passing a pre-employment drug screen and participation in the DNR ongoing random screening program. Otherwise qualified applicants who do not have a valid Class A will be allowed up to six (6) months to acquire one, as a condition of employment.

Ability and skills to safely operate and maintain medium (e.g., medium pickup - F550 or equivalent) & heavy motorized equipment, e.g. dump trucks, snow plows, tractors, dozers, tractor/trailer combinations, watercraft, grader, backhoe, front-end loader, tracked skid steer, amphibious and terrestrial tracked crawlers, in addition to power and hand tools, chain saws, air compressors, welders, carpentry tools, electrical testing equipment, and other equipment/tools as assigned.

Ability to perform semi-skilled trades work sufficient to assist or perform carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical assignments, including installation and maintenance.

Ability to become National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Fire Fight Type 2 (FFT2) qualified through completing required coursework and field training within six (6) months of hire and perform prescribed fire or wildland fire suppression duties.

Ability to perform tasks under extreme environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, sun, and wind.

Ability to understand and follow directions sufficient to interpret, communicate, and carry out assignments, safely, and efficiently.

Ability to work with limited supervision and independently solve problems as they arise.

Ability to communicate needs and issues to the Supervisor, area manager and crew members.

Ability to quickly identify and solve problems, make decisions, and adjust while working safely, and effectively with others.

Knowledge in methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in native habitat development, trades work, farming practices, and general construction.

Knowledge of computers and word processing software, such as Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Current possession of a valid Class A Driver’s License (CDL).

Heavy equipment certification on tractor, backhoe, dozer, and skid steer, S212 chain saw certification.

Technical school certificates, licensure, or degrees in one or more of the following: carpentry, construction, electrical repair, masonry, small engine repair/automotive, or HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning).

Two years of experience in safe equipment operation and maintenance, site design and construction, and landscape/ vegetation management or related skilled trades.

Knowledge of or experience in prairie, wetland, and forest habitat management and development techniques.

Two (2) years or more of experience in safe operation and maintenance of equipment such as trucks, trailers, dozers, tractors, skid steers, mowers, chainsaws, boats, ATV‘s, UTV‘s, firefighting slip-on pumpers, and other related equipment.

One (1) year or more experience in prescribed fire or wildfire suppression techniques and applications qualified at the NWCG Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) or higher.

Additional RequirementsThis position requires current possession of a valid Class A license or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment.
