How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region: The Assistant Transportation Manager assists in planning, supervising, and managing daily activities and overall performance of bus operators and dispatching staff within one of Metro Transit's bus garages. The position is responsible for ensuring timely and safe delivery of bus transit services within the region. This posting will establish an eight-month eligibility list for current and future openings.What you would do in this job

Supervises the daily operations of the garage including coordinating work assignments, communicating with the maintenance department on vehicle availability, monitoring absences, and managing daily schedules.

Supervises, counsels, and monitors the performance and attendance of Bus Operators, Dispatchers, and Garage Instructors; participates in establishing rules, standards, guidelines, and policies governing quality and quantity of work.

Recruits, selects, coaches, counsels, and provides support to improve performance in the progressive discipline of employees.

Ensures Bus Operators adhere to all current company policies, procedures, and rules including safety, customer service, attendance, uniform code, and employee conduct; documents non-compliance with company policies and procedures; and administers appropriate corrective action.

Administers and keeps proper documentation for all required regulations, policies, and procedures including disability management, drug and alcohol, family and medical leave, and worker's compensation.

Reviews, audits, and closes the daily and weekly schedules for payroll processing.

Represents the interests of the Transportation division at disciplinary hearings and grievances; research matters related to counseling and disciplinary matters; and prepares documents in support of legal proceedings.

Responds to complaints by customers and the public; investigates through interviews with Bus Operators and other relevant parties; and implements discipline procedures for Bus Operators where warranted.

Assists in planning department goals and objectives. Acts for the manager in his or her absence.

Performs other related duties.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)Any of the following combinations of increasingly responsible experience in bus operations, rail operations, public safety, or related field (business operation, management, leadership) including one (1) year of verifiable lead/supervisory experience and completed education in transportation, administration, management, public safety, or a related field :

High school diploma/GED with eight (8) years of experience, one (1) year must be of verifiable lead/supervisory experience.

Associate's degree with six (6) years of experience, one (1) year must be of verifiable lead/supervisory experience.

Bachelor’s degree or higher with four (4) years of experience, one (1) year must be of verifiable lead/supervisory experience.

Accepted lead/supervisory experience would include jobs that oversee or direct work assignment and completion, train/coach, and make recommendations on work unit improvements, services, and/or staff training/development needs.

Metropolitan Council Employees Only. Successful completion of any one of the following four Metropolitan Council Leadership/Supervisory training programs will substitute for lead/supervisory experience. You must attach your certificate(s) as proof of completion of the program to your application. Only completion of one of the four programs listed below will substitute credit (6 months or 1 year) for lead/supervisory experience.
