Join the talented, engaged and inclusive workforce dedicated to creating a better Minnesota.Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs daily and routine work road surface maintenance activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards. An employee in this class assists in the maintenance and operation of snow and ice control to ensure safe and clear roadways, and performs related work as required.Road and Surface/Roadside Maintenance

Maintains and reconstructs roadways, rights-of-way, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides-installs catch basins, places and removes Adopt-A-Highway bags, performs drainage and shoulder repair.

Performs preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operates all tractor mowers and small rollers for the purpose of maintaining roadways.

Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures they are in accordance with the provisions of the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual, to ensure the safety of the employees and traveling public.

Performs landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, brush, etc. on roadside - planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal. Includes chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding.

Snow & Ice

Maintains roadways for snow and ice control: removes snow from roadways and shoulders; opens and widens roadways of large accumulations of snow; removes snow from rights of way or yards; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slipper conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; and performs night or dawn patrols.

Prepares and inspects winter equipment - maintains snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and clean equipment post storm.

Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping on bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps and roadways.

Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.

Minimum Qualifications

A Valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction .

Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the TG level can be achieved with:

Experience: One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience)

-OR-

Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).

Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Exam Part 2: Candidates that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. (Acceptance is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.)
