Join the talented, engaged and inclusive workforce dedicated to creating a better Minnesota.The Environmental Laboratory Section of the Minnesota Department of Health, Public Health Laboratory Division is seeking a Research Scientist 3 position for the Emerging Contaminants Unit. The Emerging Contaminants Unit will be responsible for providing analytical testing for Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in environmental matrices. This testing will support environmental research and investigations of non-regulated chemical contaminants.The principal responsibilities of this position include:

Leading laboratory method development for chemicals of emerging concern in water

Maintaining and building relationships with key local, state and national emerging contaminants partners.

Novel methods and project results will be written and published in scientific journals and presented at scientific conferences. The primary chemical analysis platforms will be LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS (Q-TOF and Orbitrap).This position will work to cultivate an inclusive work environment for all, with respect to diversity and equity.Minimum QualificationsA Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, or a closely related field.ANDFour years of professional experience conducing laboratory analyses in an analytical or research program in environmental chemistry, organic chemistry, or clinical chemistry.

A Master’s degree will count towards eighteen months of experience. A PhD will count toward two years of experience.

Previous experience below is required to be considered a candidate and will be assessed during the interview process:

Analytical method development experience.

Common laboratory techniques including pipetting, weighing, and data recording.

Knowledge of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and statistics.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of toxicology, public health, and environmental health.

Significant method development experience with the following analytical chemistry platforms: Liquid Chromatography, Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS).

Applied experience with High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) instrumentation, workflows, and data interpretation.

Experience with multiple analytical software programs (Agilent Mass Hunter; Sciex OS, MultiQuant, Analyst).

Analytical experience with complex matrices such as surface and wastewater.

Experience with quality assurance programs such as EPA, CLIA and/or ISO 17025.

Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems.

Advanced degree in chemistry or closely related field.

Communication skills sufficient to organize and synthesize material from diverse sources clearly and effectively.

Ability to prepare and make effective oral and written presentations.

Experience with writing and publishing the results of research projects in scientific journals.

Ability to work independently and manage time, workload, and priorities without day-to-day supervision of activities.
