PART I: JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Director of Music
REPORTS TO: Pastor
EXPERIENCE: Music, Catholic Parish Music
SCHEDULE: Full Time, 12 months
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
The Director of Music serves to direct and coordinate the liturgical music program. This position is a shared position, half for Christ Church Newman Center and half for Church of the Holy Spirit.
PART II: LITURGY
1. Coordinate planning, preparation, and delivery of liturgical gatherings: Weekend Masses, Funerals, Baptisms, etc
2. Coordinate liturgical ministers for Christ Church Newman Center.
3. Coordinate specific planning for Christmas, Holy Week/Easter, Reconciliation.
4. Meet with families preparing for funerals, liaison for family, funeral home, parish.
5. Coordinate with pastor, staff and parish committees regarding liturgical weddings and baptisms.
6. Act as team lead of the Liturgy Committee, running quarterly meeting with pastor and parish members.
PART III: MUSIC
Music preparation and scheduling
1. Recruit and retain students and permanent community members to the music ministry.
2. Provide music leadership for Sunday liturgies and other regularly scheduled liturgical gatherings of the community, including Holy Day liturgical celebrations.
3. With the Business Manager, purchase and renew annual and short-term copyright licenses, and purchase music needed.
4. Plan for the needs of ensembles and cantors and provide them with direction and training.
5. Arrange for and coordinate paid and volunteer instrumental musicians, especially for major feasts.
6. Coordinate the music for weddings and funerals as needed.
7. Direct choir as scheduled during the academic year and for feasts/holidays.
8. Conduct rehearsals before and in advance of all liturgies as needed.
9. Maintain professional competence through practice, lessons and public music involvement.
10. Select liturgically appropriate music for assembly and the level of abilities of the volunteers in the music ministry.
Administrative
1. Participate in and share in staff meetings.
2. Develop and administer the music budgets.
3. Maintain current library in the parish music program together with appropriate licensing.
4. Present music scores in the sacristy for the parish musicians.
5. Maintain a current archive of Finale files and Power-Point presentations for each song in the parish music program in compliance with licensing and legal requirements.
6. Create weekly Power-Point presentations of music for assembly singing.
7. Be familiar with and provide supervision to the other operators of the sound systems and PowerPoint projector system.
8. Report monthly on parish music copyright usage and maintain all yearly licenses for music to LicensingOnline.org and OneLicense.net
PART IV: OTHER
1. Serve as liaison between Office of Worship and parish on events such as Diocesan liturgies, choral festivals, liturgy workshops, etc.
2. Attend workshops, renew professional memberships, and subscribe to current publications to stay informed on current liturgy practices.
Campus Ministry
1. Build relationships with college students and assist in the collaborative effort of campus ministry.
2. Maintain a liturgical life for the parish and music ministry specifically that is effective and responsive to both permanent membership, student membership, and seasonal membership.
PART V: HOURS AND COMPENSATION
1. This position is thirty-two hours per week, split between Christ Church Newman Center and Church of the Holy Spirit, not to exceed attendance for more than two normal weekend Masses.
2. Compensation is hourly, wage in accordance to qualifications and experience.
3. This position is eligible for benefits per diocesan and parish policy.
PART VI: QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education: Music degree with some choral training/experience.
2. Experience: Two years related music experience desired.
3. Other Requirements:
a. Vocal skills required, the ability to conduct a liturgical choir preferred.
b. Strong ability in keyboard
c. Passion for campus ministry, with ability to engage students in the music ministry and solid mentoring skills to form students in serving in music ministry throughout their lives.
d. Ability to work with a diverse age group and with diverse musical abilities, respectful of all levels of ability.
e. Strong knowledge of Roman Catholic liturgy including liturgical year and the rites of the church.
f. Support the teachings of the Catholic Church, the unique history and tradition of Christ Church Newman Center, and the philosophy of Saint John Henry Newman.
g. Profound respect for the Church as the Body of Christ, animated by a diversity of charisms, sensitive to animating the gifts of the Spirit given to all within the church, especially supportive of the gifts of leadership given to the lay faithful, and reflected in language and behaviors that are inclusive, hospitable and spacious.
h. Ability to engage the assembly in musical liturgy.
4. Other Special Requirements: Proficiency in music notation software for the creation and updating of scores for the benefit of assemblies and parish musicians.
Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal music, office and church environment.
Required Activities: Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, hearing, lifting, carrying, and keyboarding.
