The State of Minnesota is committed to equity and inclusion, and invests in employees by providing benefits, support resources, and training and development opportunities.What is the work:To enforce the state mandated quality standards described in Minnesota Statute Chapter 239, and Minnesota Code of Agency Rules 7601 as they apply to vehicles scales, railroad track scales, livestock scales, mass flow meters, and other assorted industrial scales generally having capacities in excess of 2,000 lbs. You do not work in an office, but from a division owned test vehicle. You plan and schedule your daily work.Training:This trainee position will last for 3-6-months with a salary of $24.65/ hr . Training will initially be at the Weights and Measures office in Burnsville but will quickly transition to field training with experienced investigators throughout the state. Overnight travel will be required during the training period. Successfully passing training will involve passing both written exams and field exams on NIST Handbook 44 and state weights & measures law, as well as demonstrating the ability to safely and correctly perform field evaluations. Upon successful completion of the training program, the employee will be appointed to the Weights and Measures Investigator I Heavy Duty position.Where you work:The position's work area includes 21 counties in northwest Minnesota. Your workstation will be located in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Daily duties will consist of carrying out inspections and performance-based testing on scales at feed mills, fertilizer plants, aggregate businesses, and other commercial businesses.Travel :This position will require 40-50% overnight travel throughout the year. Overnight travel consists of leaving your workstation on Monday morning, traveling to a location to conduct inspections, staying in a hotel Monday - Thursday, and returning to your workstation at the end of the day on Thursday. You are reimbursed for hotel and meal cost.Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED

Valid Class B driver's license with airbrake endorsement

Math skills (whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios & use of geometric formulas) sufficient to understand and solve basic volumetric equations and correctly apply measurement methods. (to be verified with a test at first interview)

Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

College or technical coursework in Mathematics or Science

Experience in any aspect of the scale industry. (Vehicle, Livestock, and Industrial scales)

Knowledge of NIST Handbook 44, MN Statute 239, Department of Commerce Rules 7601 as they relate to weighing and measuring equipment.

Experience in quality control management.

Experience in working a route (delivery, sales, etc.)

Mechanical Experience (i.e. vehicle maintenance)

Experience conducting inspections and evaluating results against technical requirements.

Physical RequirementsJob involves frequently lifting (50 lb. test weights) and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. Frequently moving 500 lb. of 25 lb. test weights with a 2-wheel cart and loading and unloading 1000 lbs. of test weights from the test truck using an electronic hoist.
